Genuine 1987 Black Album - Can anyone explain?

A short while ago somebody sold a genuine '87 black album on Ebay for around £1500. The catalogue number for the record was "WB 1-25677". Here's the link: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/...2529392918

The question is, I always thought the genuine catalogue number was "WX147", so what's the deal? Can anyone explain?

Is it safe to say that the tracklisting is still the same, though?

wx147 is the type of # you'd see on a european wbr release.

the 25677 is the usa release.

not sure if the wx147 is the 1994 release, or if actual copies leaked in europe in 1987.

quick follow-up: none of the 4 official versions i have, have the wx147 listed on it... (i have the japanese promo, the japanese cd album, the australian limited edition #'d release, and the usa version -- all from 1994.)

this page lists wx147 as a bootleg trying to fake the official 1987 release... (open the page, press control + f and do a search for wx147 on the page, you'll see it.)

this page lists wx147 as the european 1987 black album -- notice how the 25677 is broken up...)

i'd check your uptown fanzines for a definitive answer on the discrepency...

if you're serious about buying a copy the next time it comes on ebay, just beware. make sure you cover your butt with insurance and everything else. (meaning, don't buy from someone who has a 500 feedback rating but has never sold anything on ebay... don't buy from someone who won't guarantee your satisfaction, etc.)

Thanks again for all these answers to the question.

WX147 is definitely the cat number for a genuine '87 release, but I just wasn't sure of the existence of the other cat number (25677). Thanks to you, I now understand it to relate to the planned US '87 release, so as you say, WX147 must have related to the planned European release only.

Thanks!

I'll have to check my records tonight. I know I bought this LP in 1987 for $50 (Canadian) but I think it was that expensive because it was a European import. I remember that they had two versions, the one I bought which was flat black with P's image in glossy black, the other had him on the cover wearing that frilly coat from the "U got the look" video (which I think was cheaper: $30?). Someone told me the second one wasn't very good quality so I bought the more expensive one.
Anyway, mine isn't sealed so it would probably be worthless.
Interesting post though.

Thanks for the info about these being bootlegs. But I don't think I've been "had." Being had would mean I paid $2600 for a boot that I thought was 1 of 6. In 1987 I wanted this new album and it was only available as an "import." I was willing to pay $50 for it and it was worth every penny. I would have been lost when he did Bob George during the Lovesexy tour in Toronto without it.

Don't see how anyone could possibly mistake this for an original. The big red "Warning this is a boot" completely gives it away. Only a fool would miss this one.
