Prince and DeVante Swing

Is it true that DeVante Swing (famed producer of Jodeci) hitched his way to Minneapolis to be discovered by Prince, but it never happend? In fact, I heard the security never let him set foot in Paisley Park. I guess The Purple One knew he was up to no good. sad

yes, it's true... at least according to devante in an august 1995 interview in

vibe magazine:

DeVante had run away in hopes of working with Prince at the age of 16, but didn't get too far in music before he returned home. He told Vibe magazine: " I was up at Paisley Park every day begging for a job, asking people to listen to my tape. The receptionist kept saying she couldn't help me. I wasn't gonna leave until they put me on."

i'm not sure if they came out on the same day, but i did buy jodeci's debut album and "diamonds & pearls" at the beaverton tower records on the day "diamonds & pearls" was released in 1991...

Interesting...now that you mentioned it, they were both released in '91 weren't they? Maybe it was a plan of ol' DeVante.
