1999 New Master. CD quality dying after 4 years?

I decided to dig out my 1999 new master the other day, and to my horror, I found that the gold disc is becoming tarnished and worn, even though I only played it a couple of times.

I remember an news article in about 93 saying that printed paper sleeves "infect" the cd and ruin it. Has anyone else has a problem?

As a trial, I just dug out and old paper sleeve CD single by the Beautiful South, and I found, the same thing!

It has distortion and "scratches" on it, even though I have only played it a few times.

Is ONA next? Should I swap them all into jewel cases!?!?

You can wash the discs with soap and water and they'll be good as new. I've had this happen to me on occasion, even with brand new discs. They almost look like they have "frost" on them. Kind of a WTF situation when you first see this.

there's also something known as cd rot where the disc starts flaking off the code..this happens when your cd's r stored in a damp place, sunlight, when there are exposed to oxygen for long periods of time(outisde the player or case) sucks doesn't it? I say the start printing vinyl again fuck this cd shit i don't even read the liner notes to albums well cd's anymore, buying an album was an experience, you felt like you really got something for your money and not to mention the different vibes side one and Two offered just not the same anymore disbelief sorry to stray off the subject but i had to let yall muthafuckas know!!

I got something else to say edit hammer

I read a remedy to fix scratches is to use good ol' toothpaste. Spread it on the cd where the scratch is and let it dry, then buff it off with a cloth. The paste will fill in the scratch and fix the link break and will correct the skip you had.

Really!
