To each their own...I think Batman is the best he ever did. He works really good under pressure. Just look or listen to his second album.

with TRC... i just put it on & let it all groove, take it as it comes.
if u listen2 it like this instead of waiting for a certain song or want 2 skip it... it works.
u start 2 understand it.
thing is....thats the ONLY way 2 hear it really (with the exception of a couple of my faves.)
it works that way...it is a whole package,& this way,it is perfect.
i think it is his best since 'Come'
i think ppl r afraid 2 call it great because of the religious messages etc....
i just listen 2 the amazing music on this album.
most LP's i am focused on the lyrics & singing along....
& on a few songs like Muse,1+1+1=3,SheLovesMe4Me,Everlasting & Mellow i sing along like a muthafucka...

but the rest,i just take in & hear the musical genius.
it is quite amazing 2 come up with an album that flows SO WELL! when im listening 2 it as a whole i dont feel like i need 2 skip any trax.
'Come' is the only 90s album where i feel the same thing. (ok 'race' isnt his best, but still....)

as4 Parade...the sound of that album i just dont like.
half the songs i really love but listen 2 them seperate.

TRC could have been huge with different lyrics. It should have been his greatest to date. Musically, it has no equal. Sadly, religion seems to have somehow inspired TRC, then promptly killed it.

I thought TRC sucked musically as well. I'm just not into that style. I found it boring and uninteresting.

Anji, you my boy an' all . . . HOWEVER COMMA . . .

I've actually lost interest in Prince's music since TRC. Don't know why, I just have.

Musically, however, I'd agree it's among his better work.

Btw TRC is 25 years of a myriad of essence all rolled into one package..never forget that. It is his third classic as I staed before..DM, SOTT, and TRC...each seminbal records that changed his audience, self, and music.

The word "best" implies fact which can be proved or even argued. I'll just say that it's in my top 5 favorites along with 1999, Parade, SOTT, and Purple Rain knocking out Lovesexy-- no small feat in my book. Musically it just far surpasses the others. Maybe if I was still a kid TRC wouldn't rate as high but I'm not and it is almost perfect for my tastes.

TRC just eclipses most of Prince's albums over the past 10+ years...musically, it's undeniably ferocious...lyrically, it's, um, interesting...the melodies stick with you like crazy...the production values are phenomenal...it feels like a trip you're taking, instead of an album you're listening to.

Does your opinion of the album have anything to do with you being a Satanist?

Lyrically, I think The Rainbow Children can be viewed as one of Prince's finest moments. Whilst many fans have reflected their own insecurities about the beliefs contained on this album, I think the fact that the story can be viewed on many levels is one of its major strengths. Ultimately, The Rainbow Children is a unique story about an intensely personal journey of Prince's. I think it's hard to deny that Prince is still asking himself many soul searching questions. The questions are very much present throughout the album, although they seem to be receive less attention than his much berated viewpoints. I wonder why.

What I like about the lyrics of TRC is that you can read the story in many ways. It could be about his relation to Warner Bros., it could relate to his personal life and relations with women (Mayte and Mani especially), it could be about the state of humanity and it probably relates to all these themes at the same time. Of course it also displays a lot of his views on religion and racial history.

As a longtime Prince fan I like trying to figure out what the hell he means with these lyrics, but I do understand why many find them goofy at the same time...

Anji,

You get points from me for even being willing to go there, man.

Imagine starting your professional career with a top label in 1979 - 1980, only to find that your BEST work (according to you) actually came in 2001- 2002 - totally free from any contractual obligation.

Sometimes it feels like I've sat through the same Prince album over and over. Repetitive, in the sense, that many show a need to address and communicate a spiritual journey or even a finding. With Rainbow I feel like I FINALLY got it! (smile)

Rainbow Children is indeed a breath of fresh air to me as well, and as an admirer of Prince's work, its nice knowing that he's still got that kind of stuff in him.

Very glad to hear it, CDHTUNE.

I think another major ingredient as to why this album is so successful in my opinion, is that for the first time we've seen a fully fledged 'free' album by Prince, on his terms and by his standards. That's an amazing thing to listen and bare witness to, as a Prince fan.

Not at all. I just don't like that style of music. If the music was good but they lyrics stayed the same, I'd still be into it, regardless of the blabbering bullshit he lays on there. I just found absolutely no life to this record. Prince really made himself look old with it.

And though I naturally live by many statements of Satanism, I wouldn't give myself that label because I don't practice rituals or any other Satanic ceremonies. I'm more into the lifestyle and philosophies.

Wow. Really? You don't listen to "Parade" all the way through? Or "SOTT"? Or... anything since "Purple Rain"? Interesting.

I guess I could listen to Parade the whole way but some of the songs sound dated on that now - like mountains. But I still love it. SOTT - defo NO!! I love SOTT, Adore, NCTTPOYM, The Cross etc but I hate Play in the Sunshine, Ballad of Dorothy Parker (man, I'm digging my own grave here!) and Forever in my Life - maybe the 2nd CD.
