Cal Music Awards/Graham but no Prince Just got back from the California Music awards & all i got was a sunburn, and a further disdain for Oakland street people (I was raised in San Fran so I prefer my fresh out the mental ward street folk over the Oakland crack hoodlums). ANyway, Larry came out after the band "graham pain station". They're a band composed of his son, and some other guys...solid musicians, but kind of boring. They Played a bunch Sly songs, GCS songs, & welcomed Larry out recieve his award. There was alot of buzz of people hoping that Prince would be there, & John Blackwell playing for Larry also set the hopes into gear (although prince said it was "unlikely" they'd he'd show on NPGMC)
Blackwell was the highlight of the show, the guy is off the f-n meter. Out classed Graham Pain stations drummer, & made Greg D'Errico of The Family Stone Work his ass off just to hang. The diehard...hardcore, Hard-core hardcore Bay NPG were there. (my mom is one of those people) But other then that it seemed like alot of the folks who were cheering for Prince to come out- were random people who wanted to see prince for free. Larry was touched by his award, and Jerry Brown (oakland mayor) was booed as he gave to him. All & all I was glad that Prince has not entered the circuit of street fair/county fair performers...I know he loves Larry but I was actually glad he didn't perform, I think it was beneath him.

I know Larry has a daughter, but I had never heard about a son.
Well, I couldn't go, so I can't say I'm disappointed that Prince didn't show, or Sheila. But I heard some radio announcement that Larry was performing at some club and a special guest was joining him. I think it was tonight but I'm not sure. Since my head feels like it's stuffed with packed cotton (bad cold) I wouldn't be able to go to that either. Oh well. At least the sun came out where you were. In my part of the Bay it was cloudy all day.

To put nerovana's words to picture's:
Larry G at the Bammies.....ic Awards! Right click > save target as for the movie snippits of Larry in the crowd and John Blackwell. Talk to the people Larry! Larry Possessed! Please...John...don't hurt 'em! WARNING... turn down the volume before you play them. They were recorded with a digital still camera 5 feet from the stage so the sound isn't the greatest. I also have a 7 minute finale that's too big for Yahoo's servers. I've converted it from the native .mov to .mpg. Orgnote me if you're interested. We can possibly AIM it. My apologies to anyone who went to the awards show in Oakland, based on the news post that I submitted. My info was based on posts from the Bay NPG and announcements by a couple of local radio stations. Actually, according to one person in the Bay NPG, who claims to have been backstage- Prince was there but decided not to perform because of lack of security!?!?! Who knows??

I was in Club remix in Fremont Friday night to watch Pete Escobedo perform. The local radio station, KISS FM, made a special annoucement That PRINCE, Sheila E, and Pete were going to join Larry Graham at Kimballs carnival in Oakland Sunday night. I asked Pete about this and he even confirmed this. He said about 10pm was the performances. I even called Kimballs to confirm and even they said first come first serve for the $25.00 tickets for Sunday night. Well I get there about 6pm Sunday and the owner says that both Prince and Sheila E cancelled but to wait and see what happens. Well Larry`s son band performes then Larry came on after 11pm to jam with the band. I left about 12 midnight as I was too disappointed to hang out longer as it was apparent that PRINCE was a no show. Anyways, Should have listened to the NPGMUSIC website that posted on Friday that Prince was not going to be there.

So THAT'S why Larry made a mid-set dash backstage, to check & see if he'd changed his mind I suppose I wasn't there long (I got stuck @ work but slid by on my, erm... "extended" lunch hour, lol) but from what I saw there really wasn't much security there. I was on the side of the stage & you could see the path people took to get onstage. There were a lot of people in the backstage area & no security or real barriers between that area & the massive crowd. I think he probaby would have been alright in the end but who knows? If Jon B. & GreenDay were getting screams, somebody might have lost their fucking mind seeing him within grabbing distance, lol. I understand his concern... .
