..and Chaos and Disorder IS?!!? What the...? Emancipation is the only 90's album that stands the test of time and doesnt sound 2 dated. Ok, it's not a classic, and it's patchy here and there, but considering there's three discs worth of material, and a major proportion of that material is good stuff (ESPECIALLy next 2 C&D - of which ANYTHING would look great) I dont think Emanipation deserves such a bad rap.

Wouldn't it be "Prince-worthy" because...ahem...Prince did it?

The last album that was truly "Prince worthy" was Batman. After that he had occasional good tracks on overall shitty albums. "You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "

Three words in counterpoint. 1. The 2. Gold 3. Experience. Emancipation does sound dated. sounds VERY mid-90s with the exception of a couple of songs like Joint2Joint & Jam Of The Year. but i love 2cd's worth of Emancipation. as a double it would have BLOWN UP! but then again, everyone has their own fave 2cd edit of 'pation,& mine has Mr Happy,so i doubt ppl would buy mine ***************************************************************************************

Who are you to tell anyone they are not a real Prince fan?? Just because you don't like a certain song or cd, doesn't make the rest of us wrong. If I like something, I don't give a shit if any of you on the org like it or not. If the music moves me and makes me think and wonder, then I have every right to like it even if no one else does. I like all of my Prince music. Every cd/album is special in one way or another. Granted, there are songs I like more than others, but for the most part, I enjoy all my Prince music. I'm sorry for you that you don't.

Emancipation sounds SO plastic and cold sounding (most of it) that it doesn't even deserve to mentioned in the same sentence as. The Gold Experience.

Let me add that this discussion is of course a big joke, as taste is unmistakably
a matter of opinion. Please do not go through your collection throwing away everything 'the .org' dislikes, to fit in or to be a real fan. And I see people defending Prince as a standout amongst his eighties companions to this day. I think that is wrong, he should be judged by his standards, and his alone. In that light, I say that Emancipation is a mediocre record. Eager to provide three discs with an identity of its own, he forgot to produce the record coherently. The NPG bits don't fit among their synthesized neighbours, and a commercial break for a Karma Sutra CD is a bit kinky. He even dares to thread the path filled with covers, lots of covers... When it comes to filler, it would not have been so obvious when it was brought down to a double-disc set. Actually, it is a shame to hide 'Somebody's somebody', 'Betcha by golly wow!', 'The human body', 'Face down' and 'The holy river' in a three disc-set that gets recognized as self-indulgent. The thing that gets me most, is the artistic vibration, which seems to say 'Hey! I can make as much unpretentious poppy music as I like, leaving my boundaries where they are, while tightening the spectrum of my sound.' Had he not released 'The rainbow children', this would be excellent proof that he needs a tight record company that gets on him every single time (without taking the lead as in the case of 'Rave to be that slave fantastic').

I'm sorry if I insulted any of you Prince fans, of course it is all a matter of taste if you like an album or not. I just liked the thought of making a bold statement to see how you people react.
Nevertheless I still feel that Emancipation is the weakest link in Prince's recording history. After all this talk about finally being free, I expected him to release some bold, adventurous, innovative and experimental music like the "Crystal Ball" track. Instead he came up with a 3cd box filled with (IMHO) very mediocre, plastic sounding, cheesy mainstream tracks and lame covers. I think I have never been more disappointed by Prince when I first heard "Emancipation" and it was the first album I didn't buy immediately the day it came out. I bought it two years ago for about 8 euro (which in my opinion is still too much money), only to complete my collection... Anyway, I take back my words, anyone who loves Prince's music is of course a true Prince fan, even the ones that like "Emancipation". I love y'all!!! RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Well don't you sound like the WB!?!
"Next time ya pull a card, it betta be a ace, MF,... " If you take off the title and rename it as "The Blueprint Volumes I, II & III," its the bomb, though, aint it? Who'd have thunk that the man had all that in his bladder after leaving WB, right? Personally, if'n I was Prince and I made an album with THREE hours of music on it - I would have charged more than $24.99. Especially knowing that years later someone would trash it as not even being "Prince-worthy." That album was a steal. Was it Prince worthy? Please! 'Was it FAN worthy?' is the better question! I will agree that albums like Emancipation, The Black Album - come off moreso as "responses" than necessarily CREATIONS of art. The Black Album was very "I still got it!" Emancipation was very "And I got ALOT of it!" (smile) At best, I walked away from Emancipation knowing for sure that the man still had a GREAT DEAL of creativity in him. And there are some VERY humble moments in there. White Mansion and In This Bed Eye Scream being two of my favorites. And Facedown!?!? Ouch! Prince.. can ya cuss for me just ONE MOE TIME, please! I think some folk aint hear ya! What I recall most about the whole period was the emergence of www.thedawn.com, Prince owned websites and the need to directly communicate with fans. I'm cool with it for saving me money, but no matter how many threads go tumbling down this screen, I want Prince listening to his muse.. not me.
