It's '85 all over again

Think about it.
Prince does something, which pisses a lot of people off. Prince stays happy. Whole situation seperates the "real' fans from the fakers.

This could also describe the symbol years too.

Strange...hmm

didn't kind of thing happen in 87/88 with The Black Album and Lovesexy? Then in 93 with the name change. Then in 96 with Emancipation and marriage to Mayte. Then in 1999 with his marriage to Larry Graham?

it's getting kinda boring now. pick a topic Prince and stick to it will you. just don't be preachin' about it. nobody's interested - just play the damn guitar.

O.K. I fgured you were talking about ATWIAD, whicj us true blues loved. All it did was shake the fakers off, which was good. Were people pissed he didn't sing on We Are The World? Didn't he send Sheila in his place?

I don't know if he sent her in his place, but, yeah, people were pissed about that too.

I'm not really feeling the new stuff. Then again, other than ONA, I haven't heard the new stuff, because I loathe doing business with Prince's entity directly. That's my hangup, I know, but I say that 2 say that not all the people who dislike his new output r "fakers." I've heard some music fans say they were diehard P fans before {fill in LP here]. Does that mean they were "faking" their love for P music prior to [fill in LP here]?

I see what you're saying, I'm just saying I don't think it applies in every instance.

True fans will stick by him through the good and bad times. That doesn't mean that we agree with everything he says and does. It just means that if you truly felt his music you know that he's never really changed. Evolved yes. Changed no. The same spirit is within him and it shows in the music.
I don't look to Prince as some kind of spiritual guide, though he may want us to. I can see in the music and in his actions that like all of us he's been hurting and he's been searching. I can relate to that and in that sense we are brothers if anything. Sometimes brothers anger you and they call you names but at the end of the day you love them all the same.
This is all in a musical sense I'm speaking, of course. Those who don't feel this way aren't necessarily fakers but they don't or can't really feel the music.
Those of us who still pine for the days of Lovesexy and Dirty Mind are holding him back on his journey and perhaps this is why he is being "divisive"-- though he may not be doing so intentionally.
Ultimately, if you can't get with TRC it's probably time to get off this train so to speak. Like it or not, this album was strong and was a definitive statement as to which direction Prince is headed. Maybe you'll have to catch him the next time around.

Right before he released ATWIAD, he also announced he was retireing...I believe he said he was gonna go 'looking for the ladder' or something like that (I could be mistaken about that last part, it's been awhile wink )

I wouldn't really agree with that. TRC was, indeed, strong in it's production and arrangement but I wouldn't say the composition was amazing... Of course, I didn't care for much of the content, either, and I usually like "loopy Prince".

The nice thing about Prince, though, is that if you don't like a current direction just hang tight because he tends to turn on a dime at a whim. 18 months from now he won't even sound like the same person, I'm betting.

Okay, okay, okay. Let me calrify what I meant by 'fakers'- I mena the people who appear to be all open-minded and ready for change, ect., but when Prince doe sjust that (chnage) people start complaining and such, Most recently people saying he's racist and homophobic, when half of the people who are saying this are just that themselves You know, the people that always dwell on the negative. That's what I meant by 'faker', probably no the best choice of word, but it's sorta hard to sum it all up in one word.
I'm not saying this applies to al instances, but sometimes it does ('85) back then people were saying the sam ethings as they are today: complaining that he's changed, how weird/controlling/mean/possesively he is (most recently the whole hahn book). This is exactly the sorta thing that happened back in '85.
IMHO.

i don't even slightly understand how you've come to the conclusion that the "people" who have been saying prince is homophobic are themselves homophobic.

what makes you think someone who is homophobic would call prince homophobic? let's leave the racial part out of it for now, since you mentioned them both and i'm most curious about the homophobic part...

what I meant by the homophobic part is that hlaf of (if not, more) people who bitch and complin about him being a JW sya its because of the not agreeing with homosexallity part.
while, as exhibted in some posts here on the org, they make homophobe remarks as well. I remember one orger here saying how Prince has chnaged drastically, ect. and pointed out that JWs are homophobes, BUT then, on a Wendy and Lsia thread said something like, "What a waste".
Maybe I went a little bit too far, but all I'm saying is that some of the people who complain about the JW thing and come up with the fact that being a JW means being a homophobe isn't really that comforable with gays themselves, as that one orger showed. I know it's hard to undrestand, but it does happen.

It is rare with the whole homophobic thing, BUT not so rare with the racist thing.

.....make sense now?
