New Power Generation...of Women

There seems to be a huge difference in the career paths of the first generation of Prince's women and the second generation.

The careers and visibility of the women he worked with or dated during the '80s (e.g. Vanity, Apollonia) ended up in obscurity. Of course the major exception is Sheila E. I sometimes come across Vanity--Denise Matthews--on Christian programs. Last saw Apollonia on VH1's "I love the 80s."

But the women from the past decade (e.g. Mayte, Carmen Electra, Nona Gaye) are carving their own identies and careers. Nona Gaye is a very good actress who did an exceptional job in "Ali." Carmen has had several jobs over the years that have kept her in the public eye (and a marriage to Dennis Rodman). I think Mayte is trying to do the same. While it may not be the most fantastic start, she's featured in a new Zima commercial. Perhaps she, too, plans to act in the near future. And of course, her much discussed relationship with Tommy Lee.

I just think it's interesting that the general public is unaware of their history with Prince. This is particularly true with Nona and Carmen. Whereas the first group was synonymous with Prince.

It might be a most inauspicious end though.

You make some good points. I never really thought about this. Do you think it's because they are disassociated with Prince that they've gone on to establish careers and identities of their own? (Well, in Carmen's case I still think that identity is pretty much the one P gave her!)
