some people dont think in racial terms with superstars yet they hypocritcally do in real life and with everyday people...plainly they will call everyday people a mayriad of names and label them , stereotype them etc

then when their star says something they dont agree with etc they become just like everyday people in the fact they are not above being called racial slurs as they thought of them before etc

hmm...i didn't read the post where this guy said the "slap you back to africa" thing...but of course that comment is ridiculous.

there's a really fine line between joking and -ism (racism, sexism, whateverism). i know that as a gay man i make MANY jokes that even 5 years ago i myself would have been horribly offended by.

generally, it's not considered "okay" to make any of these jokes unless you're part of whatever group you are making fun of - and that makes sense to me. therefore, i feel free to make polish jokes, italian jokes, fag jokes, and nerd jokes. i am all of those things, and my sense of humor is just part of me - i can't explain it more than that, it just is.

this whole racism thing that has come up lately...well, i don't know. i personally can't imagine how one could be really into prince's music and be racist...but then, *i* can't understand how one can listen to prince and be homophobic, and if i've learned ANYthing over the last couple months, it's that the vocal majority of prince fans on this site and ESPECIALLY the club seem to be at least as homophobic as the rest of society, if not more so.

rdhull...i posted some comments on one of the threads about the new so-called "lyrics" prince posted...and then i stopped, b/c it seemed that b/c i was saying that i thought prince's lyrics were rather juvenile, ill-informed and divisive, people were pegging me as a "racist". i assure you, i'm not.

how do y'all feel about homosexuality? i don't mean to jock your thread, but i wanted to post to let you know that...well, to let you know that i agree with you in that there are many people who although they're okay with black celebrities, when it comes down to it, they're racist in everyday life.

i don't understand that type of thing. i support artists and art that i feel corresponds with my beliefs...for example, i loved guns 'n roses when i was a kid, but in 7th grade or whatever when "g 'n r lies" came out and it had that lyric about "police and niggers" and "immigrants and faggots", i was sickened, and stopped listening to the music.

i'm at a point now where i'm not sure what to do...i mean, i don't think i could stop listening to prince music even if i really tried - in fact i'm pretty sure i COULDN'T...

but i don't want to support someone who preaches intolerance and homophobia. i know that's something that nobody cares about, but to me it's a huge deal. prince and his music were instrumental when i was an effeminate, skinny, weird kid who sucked at sports...it made me feel like there WAS a place where i fit in.

now? i don't know. i DO know that i'm definitely not wanted.

every single muthafucka at this damn website should follow RD around and learn a thing or two... this mutha is NOT afraid to speak his damn mind... ...

You asked how we felf about homosexuality, well i for one, see absolutely nothing wrong with it. I don't beleive Prince to be homophobic either, but, hey, that's just my opinion. I have known some JWs and while they say they don't 'agree' with it, so to speak, the aren't prejudiced aganist gays either, if that makes any sense. Since that religion preaches love, the JWs I talk to feel that it is wrong to judge/discriminate against gays. I, personally, am glad that this has happened, since it has outed many people. Prince seems real good at 'outing'. doesn't he? I mean, he's laso outed quite a few homophobes as weel (you know, the people, who, as soon as they hear the nmae Prince, go out and say something about him being gay). I think he's great at outing narrow-minded people, now whether that's his intent or not, I don't know. I just know that he does one hell of a job doing it

But from Kevins Smiths commentary it showed that Prince seemed dumbfounded as to why people "were getting the wrong idea" and that he cant control what people think in all homesty. Which to me shows that he actually means no harm or whatever everyones clainming him to be. He is cming onto some new light or his own awareness of his culture, spirtuality or what have you but to think he is being purposefully or even closemindedly against certain groups etc is soetimes silly. Im sure there are whiote or green or blue people still on his staff etc, as part of his touring company etc.

Now with that said, Princes beliefs , ways of living or doing his business has come under fire with great zeal to humiliate, make fun if etc. Some of it warranted and some not. Now that his lyrics are shwoing someting in his own awareness and beliefs the audience is now becoming what they claim he is at times..look how easy it is for some folks to cal someone a faggot etc, show soem of their racial views that arent to kopesetic(sp?). This is what most people are fighting and arguing about, not Princes lyrics etc...

Now if you feel that prince is actually excluding you then theres nothing that can be done about that. You feel how you feel. Until Prince blatantly comes out and says "no whites and no lesbians and no whatever" then I refuse to beleive such nonsense. If you went to last years concerts you can see how he interacted with all kinds of people etc. Hell last I heard he went to Europe not Africa to play.

It all boils down to Uptown is boolshet..he tried maybe harder than its members, us , the audience. And I will say this on my life or god strike me down, I have no beef with anyone, any race, any religion (well almost hehe) or any lifestyle etc. ..but I see a lot of other people who do, and who would have a problem with my race etc and many of them are the ones who are doing all the hollering about prince and his supposed closed mind.
I do have a problem with ignorance though and so far I have not seen Prince display it by simply doing what he is doing however heavy handed he gets accused of doing, then some of tose who are in the so called fall-out.

The lyrics to the songs kinda bothered me and to a cetain extent, they still do and I'm black. I have also pondered, like you, why he hasn't made some formal statement about this controversy swirling about. I don't believe Prince is racist. If I did, I would be gone. No boycott posts or I 'm selling my shit posts and no trying to convince others to come with me posts. I hope you don't go anywhere. Maybe one day, we can get our questions answered. There room here for all of us who want to stay.
