Prince album study #3, Diamonds And Pearls.

2freaky expert review grade: 3 and a half stars out of 5.

A weak moment for Prince to be sure; this album is Prince trying to follow strict commercial rules of slickness. The MC Hammer rap styles being obvious.

He became worried when Graffiti Bridge failed in selling albums--plus the obvious bombing of the film, as well. So Prince went the easy way out, and went for radio friendly ideas mostly. But D&P's has it's great parts:

Thunder has a swelling, massive drum sound, but vague religious lyric. Quite a good song, actually. No heart stopper, but good.

Daddy Pop starts the slide. Surprised this wasn't a single, since it is very radio friendly, and rather uneventful. This is Prince watered down and safe. The song is pedestrian and meanders. If he has grooves on the shelf, then why this?

Diamonds And Pearls (worship) is a glimmering ballad, very commercial and sweet, but very well written. One of my faves at the time, but I have since learned to merely like this song. Great Coda near the end though. Whew. Lame video.

Cream is controversial because of possible plagiarism of the song Bang A Gong. Great groove though, Amazing guitar. Wonderful song. Even if he didn't write it..lol

Strollin is one of the best P songs of the 90's bar none. This is light jazz with originality. Amazing chorus. I never tire of this song. Fuckin masterpiece.

Willing And Able is a neat little song, even though the video version is better. Mid tempo groove that makes you feel good all over. Real good.

Gett Off is another masterwork. Hard funk but from another planet. Another originality signature from the purple one. Simple melody, but great song. His best attempt at rap.

Walk Don't Walk is light and airy. Horn sounds are cool Great idea. Not the best song in the world but passable. Light as air but lacking soul.

Jughead is good, fuck all you haters. lol.

Tony M sucked, but it is funky. Can't help it, it grooves. Sue me.

Money Don't Matter 2Night is another highlight of the 90's. Great songwriting. Proves we underrate his pop prowess. Amazing chorus and song. Spike Lee Video was depressive though.

Push is groove heavy but worthless. A bunch of sounds strung together and bombastic drums. He tries and fails to have a great rap song. Just mildly amusing. Mostly when you are drunk. He he.

Insatiable sounds like other ballads he has done. He is trying to do another Adore, but with less results. Melody is ok, but he can do better. Really quite boring for P. Video was idiotic.

Live 4 Love is neat to listen too, but only good because of the lyrics. He does a first person story song; which he rarely does. His anti-war stuff is appealing, but I don't feel his sincerity. He never was that good with political lyrics. Decent song, but not great.

Overall failed album. 3 classics are a good perk for non fans to buy it, but that's that. Better to burn the songs off the internet. lol

aw, the introducing of Tony M...evillol

Anyway, it's an okay album, Prince was definitely trying to be commercial.

I liked it better when it first came out, doesn't get much play from me nowadays.

"Money don't matter 2 night" is really the only song that moves/impresses me.

I hated the title track with a passion, still not too thrilled by it today

Actually...Push is one of my favorite songs from the 90s! It's funky and I love the message. Listen to it stoned, it might make more sense stoned

His WORST album ever. He tried to be too comercial with the whole rap crap on it. And there's no consistency throughout. I would have prefered either ALL rap/dance/drum machine stuff Or ALL acoustic/ballady stuff

THE "QUICK" RUN DOWN:
Thunder sounds like it should have been a B-side. Daddy Pop is just a standard Prince-party-jam. Diamonds & Pearls is nice, but not spectacular. Stollin' also sounds like it should have been a B-side, and is basically the same as Yellow (by Sheila E). Willing And Able is good, no complaints. The Gett Off maxi-single is cool, but it sounds like shit on the album. Walk Don't Walk is average. Tony M on Jughead & Push makes me want to puke. Money Don't Matter is great. Insatiable is average compared to songs like Adore. Live 4 Love is probably the best song on the album.
(I decided not to mention Cream because it truly is the worst Prince song ever!!!) (...DOH I just mentioned it!)

I agree. This album gets no play, however. Too many weak moments.

My Take:

Thunder - cool, but kinda corny and kinda over-done.

Daddy Pop - good song ruined by Tony M. rap

Diamonds And Pearls - musically sweet, but lyrics are shit

Cream - brilliant

Strollin' - nice

Willing And Able - nice, video version better, Tony M.
tolerable

Gett Off - ok, I like Houstyle better

Walk Don't Walk - uninteresting

Jughead - groove is funky, Tony M. isn't

Money Don't Matter - the perfect mid-tempo song, very
smooth

Push - don't like it, only like Prince's rap ("It's thunder
when I'm on the mic...")

Insatiable - brilliant, one of his best ballads, great vocal

Live 4 Love - ok, guitar work is good, Tony M. not needed

Here's my review of the D&P album, note:
This album was a key in the start of my relationship with my g/f...

Thunder : always loved it, overproduced but very enjoyable, layer upon layer of sound...Nice picture disc!
Daddy pop : Bit of a disappointment, nice bass (thanks Aretha) and interesting rap (grooves upon the shekves, where r they??) but very uneventful..
Diamonds & pearls : This song is a masterpiece, beautiful.
Cream : when I first heard it I hated it! I just couldn't get used 2 this sound... But after seeing it performed on Arsenio it redeemed itself.
Strollin' : excellent jazzy song, surprisingly strong after all these years.
Willing & Able : great song would've done better if edited or as the video version (which imo is much better).
Gett Off : classic!! powerful funk song, as powerful now as then!
Walk don't walk : throwaway jam,nothing spectacular...
Jughead: hate it...
Money don't matter 2 nite : a classic song, liked the edited version better as the album version drags a bit.. But a classic nonetheless!!
Push : Nice attempt at a dance song, not 2 great not 2 bad..
always liked P's rap wink
Insatiable : yes it's true another ballad a la Adore, scandalous but nice nonetheless.
Live 4 Love : Nice song with some strange P lyrics, just imagine P as a pilot lol , always liked the demo version better (spookier).
Overall : a mediocer P album but a good pop album, however time hasn't treated the overall feeling of teh album well, the raps are dated and P could've done better if he really wanted

How'd u like my diamond edit??

correction: Spike Lee's video is not "depressive", it's reality.

ps: get your mind out of the mall and into the real world.
