And now we're getting songs about blackness all the time, about afrocentrism, the importance of roots, of history. Songs about the injustice that has been done to Prince, to the black people. Well, hmm, Prince, you haven't technically picked cotton in anyone's fields yourself, have you? In fact, you have quite a luxurious life in America, don't you? Better than the vast majority of America's white citizens. Fair enough if you want to write songs about injustice, but these songs overstep the mark, valuing words over ideas and valuing the past over the present.

What does picking cotton, has to do about the injustice that we Black folks face today? What because he hadn't picked cotton means that he shouldn't speak of the injustice of being Black in this country. I guess that Jews shouldn't talk about the Holocaust because they didn't all go to the chamber. Or is it because he's rich he doesn't know what it means to be Black? You don't think he had to work twice as hard for the life he has? Overstepping what mark? Valuing the past, baby you always value the past to move ahead in the future. The past creates the person you are today.

Stop dredging up ancient history and preaching about which race is more righteous than the next, because, frankly, it's disturbing

Well, well, welcome to OUR world, it ain't so pretty being on the other side it it? Again, I state from a previous thread...Whenever it's OUR history, it's always ancient history and need to be forgotten, but white people hold on to history, change it, rearrange it, and send it back out there and then tell us to have pride in it. You know the importance of history that's why y'all never let it go, why should we. Prince's racism, I think you overlooked yours.

wow...go away for just a few days and you miss so many good threads!

i just want to say that i do not think Prince has ill feelings toward any particular race, rather towards certain members of particular races. the ones who add to the problems. i do not think there is a problem with discussing political, racial, or spiritual issues within one's work. these little digs at stereotypes extend all the way back to early records (check out DMSR..."all the white people clap your hands on the 4 now...1,2,3...1,2,3") but he also makes fun of black stereotypes (check out Style and tons of other songs). the point is Prince makes fun of stereotypes and points out how silly they are. I agree with some other views on here regarding a double standard on the presentation of different races, though. for instance, if a black rapper mimics a "white" voice it is considered funny and accurate but if a white person were to mimic a "black" voice t would be racism. But i do not see the connection with Prince there...other than the fact that he will call you out on it!

I hear:" dancing like a WILD girl..."
Wich sounds more logical to me.

Nope,he is saying "dancing like a WHITE girl".Btw,I don't think that line is offensive at all. It's meant as a joke.

yeah right, until I make jokes about black people...

It is just a joke, but I agree if a white artist made a similar light-hearted stereotype joke, it would be pounced on.

I think it's perceived as OK for black people to joke about white people in the media because no-ones wants to cause a fuss, and stir up a hornets nest.

Rock & Rollers have been doing it for decades...
If i was a fan of a certain band and i suddenly
found them to be offensive to me in any REAL way
i'ld stop listening to them, but then that's the
thing of it. I listen to whut i like and that's
a lot of different types of music.

Prince never made racist statements until recently.
I don't know why he doesn't relax and enjoy his numerous blessings.

If you look closely, you'll see it's *you* coming out with this "us and you" shit.

And please don't tell me I won't let history go. I hardly care about history at all. You don't know me in the slightest. Oh, I see; you were assuming I was a typical white guy.

As for the Jewish holocaust, it's not a good analogy. If my favourite Jewish pop star suddenly started preaching about the holocaust every five minutes and singing songs about how "we suffered in the camps" and started wearing a skull cap and a fake beard, then I'd be pissed off, yes.
