I just can't get over the amount of Political Correctness that goes on today. You can't say certain things anymore. If it offends one person then it all of a sudden becomes offensive to the masses!! Whats that all about!?!

Went through a stage over here where people were saying "Snowperson" instead of "Snowman"!!!

As for "Dancing like a white girl" who cares! It is meant as a quip!! People say white people don't have rhythm, jewish people have big noses, black women have big behinds. Everyone knows that isn't always the case. Its just a joke!

Oh well you can't please all the people all the time.

Live a little unremarkable, laugh a little too!! It will all make sense in the end!!

And now we're getting songs about blackness all the time, about afrocentrism, the importance of roots, of history. Songs about the injustice that has been done to Prince, to the black people. Well, hmm, Prince, you haven't technically picked cotton in anyone's fields yourself, have you? In fact, you have quite a luxurious life in America, don't you? Better than the vast majority of America's white citizens. Fair enough if you want to write songs about injustice, but these songs overstep the mark, valuing words over ideas and valuing the past over the present.

Prince. Where people come from, doesn't matter. Where words come from, doesn't matter, either; it's what we mean by them that counts. Stop dredging up ancient history and preaching about which race is more righteous than the next, because, frankly, it's disturbing.

I hear racism in what you wrote here.

And it wasn't even so long ago you wrote:

"If the air is a little thick in this room 2nite
I reckon it's the result of an onslaught of separatist rookies
Overcome by this colorful sight

Talkin' so fast that even they
Talkin' so fast that even they
Don't know what they mean

Of all the things that base a rhyme
How is it that U everytime
Regurgitate the racist lines that keep us apart?"

Yeah, woo, that argument sure puts me in my place! Clever you! You managed to show *me* up as a racist!

Except, of course, you didn't at all. Nice of you to insinuate, though. Sigh.

Prince can talk about his feelings as much as he likes, but when he tells me white folks dance worse than black folks, it's as racist as me telling you black people aren't as clever as white people. And when he draws lines between people of different descents, well, why? There's only one reason--to say one is better or more righteous than the other. Who cares who had what culture when? I'd like to think we're all grown up now, and we've all mixed up, and it's a good thing. Celebrate it.

It reminds me of the people who look at a word's etymology to know what it means (something Prince is guilty too, of course). "Well, this word came from France in the 1600s, and it meant this, so you're wrong to use it like that"...what rubbish! It is what you make it.

That's a recognized phallacy, by the way. Have a read of this, Prince:

dude, anybody can have bad rhythm...don't matter what color your skin is, whatcha background is, whatever.

and getcha priorities straight: i'd rather someone tell me that i can't dance on the one than tell me my nationality ain't worth anything. neutral

See, it's easy for white people to say race doesn't matter, nationality doesn't matter, history doesn't matter.

Because white people have the luxury of ignoring race if they feel like it. People of color do not. Racism and the legacy of slavery insinuate themselves into nearly every aspect of reality for most black people today. White folks, especially those who do not live in inner-city areas, can either pay attention and become part of the solution, or they can ignore it and remain part of the problem.

Exactly--anyone can have bad rhythm. But that's not what Prince seems to believe, is it?

And, for what it's worth, I don't care about my nationality, but if anyone tells me I can't dance, they've got an argument on their hands.

From the "normal" language of the 80s albums, we suddenly get tracks full of "nigga" and "check 1,2", "brothas"...I don't recall a "hood" anywhere, but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

1. From this I assume "normal" language is language which contains no black slang or references to black brotherhood.

2. "Suddenly"?

"What u lookin' for, nigga?" -Cloreen Baconskin, 1983
"I'm the kinda brotha that the more you scream..." -Horny Toad, 1982
"My sister didn't give a goddamn" -Sister, 1980 lol heehee

But black people are more naturally inclined to be rhythmic than white people. It's one of natures given attributes.

Also they're better sprinters (see the Olympics) than white folk. Fortunately for whitey, there is always the swimming pool. wink
