If the BBC were to approach you for a mainstream (but credible) TV documentary on Prince...

...what would your 'story' be? reading

This programme will potentially be aired as one of a number of a documentaries currently being pitched within the BBC. This is in conjuction with the programmed resurgence in scheduling 'credible art' within the flagship channel of the BBC, BBC1.

1) The BBC needn't have to be in America in order to talk to you, Dansa.

2) You would see the show because you'd want to see this show.

3) Think!

There are a number of 'credible art' documentaries in the pipeline for BBC1, as mentioned in the original post. I want all of your ideas for what the story could be, in order to make it a successful, mainstream endeavour. I'd like the slant to be different this time, I have a few ideas already.

Hmm, lemme me think Anji.

Mainstream but credible about Prince.. there's nothing mainstream about the kid anymore. Unless they wanna talk about how he is doing so much better now than he was with WB? But thats kinda been said on Prince's gazillions.

True, Prince is not a mainstream artist anymore but this phase of documentaries is not necessarily about what is currently in the mainstream. If anything, it is the complete opposite; focusing on stories in such a way so as to make them still appeal to a mainstream audience. Also, it's worthwhile keeping in mind that a channel like BBC1 should be about quality programming.

Any ideas, anyone? reading

What about something along the lines of artistic expression serving as a substitute for traditional forms of life coaching? 'Prince's Uptown.'

I imagine that this topic would require many face-to-face interviews with fans, and I'm not exactly sure how we'd all come across. Next idea! lol

I PREDICT:

there's going to be a few around the Purple Rain 20th Anniversary re-release. it's too obvious for the mainstream media not to pick up on him. Magazines in the UK have been doing the whole Prince re-visited features for the last 6 months - i-D, The Face, Muzik x2, Q, Mixmag, Blues & Soul... TV production companies are going to pick up off this and tie it in the Purple Rain marketing when that becomes more clear... hopefully they'll be granted some access to the studio's where the re-mastering and editing is happening. i doubt prince will be involed though.

True, but I want a unique story and selling point - even if it focuses on Purple Rain. You must have one, NME.

It's actually, 'Just ask Boris!' lol

(Prince being a living legend for our generation is the obvious story, Dansa. I want something that will capture people's imagination, and make them think).

What would all of your perspectives be on a documentary focusing on Prince's change in lifestyle? 'From Sex God To Jehovah.' This might work.

The music would be an integral part of any story. 'From Sex God To Jehovah' might focus on the effect his change in lifestyle has had on his music, and his fanbase. It's just an idea but one that almost every Prince fan seems to be strangely drawn to.

Some of the controversial topics that work here, should work in the mainstream too. So, if you want the music, what's the unique story, Dansa?

I think whatever the story is they really need to make sure they get some good people - both current and past - to contribute. Show the WHOLE picture as best as they can and if possible (and I know it probably won't be) - the side of the man himself. Who knows, if it is about why he changed to JW he may discuss.

This should go without saying but I do understand that with Prince, we've rarely seen it happen. As for Prince contributing, that's not really necessary. What would he want to discuss that would be digestable to the mainstream? I'd side with rare, archived musical footage.

woot!

Which of his 'entourage' in the past, or present, would you most like to hear perspectives from? And concerning what?

I think this would prove the basis for the most compelling 'human' story. 'From Sex God To Jehovah' seems to fit rather well. I'd rather contribute to a story like that, than just another documentary charting the historical musical highs and lows.
