I believe that the happiness is more apparent on Lovesexy because of the emergence from the darkness of the Black Album.
Was that feeling Prince got actually enlightenment, rather than happiness?

hmmm

Could be?
But I do agree that the vibe on TRC was not so much happiness as this is where I am now.

At first it looked obvious to me but it isnt. Lovesexy was forced happy..TRC is not. Of course TRC seems much darker and bitter but its honest at least..an honest happiness found. Nothing like the forced and faked unrealistic happy of Lovesexy. I still cant believe people fall for that one still.

Maybe in retrospect it looked forced and faked to you but when it came out I remember feeling the happiness and I could not put my finger on it until I heard the Black album. He was someplace where he had not been before, call it enlightenment or happiness but it was different at the time. Now looking back and with TRC and his religious conversion to compare it with I could see how people could "fall" for the "happiness" of TRC and think that the happiness on Lovesexy is contrived, but at the time, 1987-88, I believe it was genuine.

Personally, I prefer Lovesexy sonically.
At 1st, I didnt agree with what RDhull said, but then I sat and pondered on what he'd posted awhile. I THINK (and correct me here if Im wrong RD) what He was trying 2 put across is that whereas Lovesexy's themes of happiness, positivity, peace and joy were ethereal, spiritualistic, and ungrounded, The Rainbow Children finds a 'truth' within reality - albeit a sometimes cold/harsh one.
Whether or not that particular 'truth' is 2 YOUR liking however, is I guess 4 another thread, another time...

Whether it (Lovesexy) was genuine to Prince at the time, it sure was genuine to so many of us who were inspired by that album when it first came out. For Prince to basically say that TRC is the real deal, when Lovesexy did so much to save me spiritually, well it just smacks sour in my mouth.

I would have no problem with Prince giving his message and leaving it at that, but I did have a problem that he tried to dismiss Lovesexy and insert TRC in it's place.

Where on earth did Prince compare The Rainbow Children to Lovesexy? I've always assumed it was just the people on here. Both are very genuine expressions, in my opinion.

(Rd, does the reworking of The Ball necessarily remove the authencity in its expression on Eye No? I don't think so).

Yeah I think thats it. I mean some of Princes yearnings and reaching has been kind of unfathonmable, basic, and at times unrelaistic. TRC may have found happy in a cold harsh world, but thats what we live in. A cold harsh one. We all KNOW this. We all have our experiwences etc. And Im not trying to go the cynic or easy "realistic" route. Im just saying how things are.

I remember on the NPGMC year 1 where Prince, or at least one of his people, stated something like TRC is what Lovesexy was meant to be or something to that effect. If someone that worked for Prince made that statement, it was made on his site without any correction so I took it as a sanctioned statement from Prince.

Im jus sayin..lots of things can move or inspire or help people. Point being most people thinking that this Lovesexy by that freak prince is spiritual and guiding or helpful etc? See?
Im saying in our Prince context it did not move me.I did not feel it and felt it was bogus etc. The anger of things in 1999 and the atmosphere of love surrounding ATWIAD and soem of PR and throughout SOTT were more real to me. Lovesexy coming after all of that seemed...pedestrian at times.

Personally speaking, I think Eyo No has much more passion about it than The Ball. I can see where the origins came from but he took that song to another level; I guess that's Lovesexy for you, Rd.

You say pedestrian, I say salvation!

I never tire of telling this story (and yes I cut and pasted cuz it's always how I feel)
___

I think many of us who have been fans since the beginning tend to base our opinions on how good a Prince album is, especially one from the 80s, on how much it affected us in our lives at that time. I was 18 when Lovesexy came out and I was just dealing with admitting I was gay. I drew on the spiritual strength of that album to help me get through the rejection I faced from family and friends. I listened to it with a searching soul and I found answers. Some of the answers lie in the album itself, but other answers I discovered within my own self as I listened over and over. Seeing Prince on the cover naked and bare gave me the strength and courage to face my own newfound “nakedness”. Having to face society’s anger and hate was a tough choice but I thought if Prince could be THAT honest and open, so could I. I always saw the cover as one of God’s creatures simply existing in a state of truth. I always knew the cover wasn’t supposed to be a nasty thing, rather Prince exposed and bare and having no shame about basking in the glorious knowledge he found in the midst of despair.

For personal reasons I happen to believe that this album IS a masterpiece. But I also believe this from a musical standpoint. IMO, Lovesexy still sounds fresh. If you took that album and compared it to any and everything around it at the time it was released, it totally stands alone. The only argument about the sound being dated is the use of the Linn drum, other than that, you can’t say this has an 80s sound to it. You really can’t even compare it to the music that Prince made before and after. It is so unique. I agree that this album personified Prince the best.

I love the lyrics. Even the “silly” ones. One of the things that is the most fun about Prince’s music is trying to figure out what all the metaphorical wording means. It brings out the creativity in us all when we discuss lyrics that make absolutely no sense on the surface. Usually we come to amazing conclusions and for that, the lyrics will never bother me. Besides there are many other lyrics that stand out, probably the best being “In every man’s life there will be a hang-up, a whirlwind designed to slow you down. It cuts like a knife, it tries to get in you…this spooky electric sound. Give up if you want to and all is lost, Spooky Electric will be your boss………….Don’t kiss the beast, be superior at least”. I STILL to this day rely on this album to help me achieve the right frame of mind when I think I’m down for the count. It puts me on my feet every time.

Love God, Love Life, Lovesexy!!

This is the truth! Case in point...My lord is so quiet, when he calls your name. When you hear it your heart will Thunder...You will want to hear it everyday!"

I guess all we're really discussing here are the differences between the euphoric expressions of faith in Lovesexy to the ones of a calmer, more assured nature in The Rainbow Children.

Perhaps, happiness was a poorly chosen word to describe the difference between the two albums. As Rd suggests, the dream and reality? I guess it all depends on which reality you choose to live. It appears Prince has chosen his.

So? Just because he wrote more ethereal or so called inspirtation words to The Balls music doesnt change the fact that in heart it is not authentic..."hmm..the ball..lemme change the words and spruce it up to something that fits this Lovesexy theme" etc.

I dont care if he wrote the magna friggin carta to The Ball..he still was not authentic (hence fake) about this etc.
