'Everlasting now' is good. But, I notice it means very little to non-fans. I want to see Prince coming back with a truly great song and blow everyone away!

Unfortunately it's not always "the song" that blows everyone away, but the marketing. Prince has always had the music to do it, but since his split with Warner, he hasn't the power over the media he once did to take control once more. The music is out there if you want to find it, you just have to know where to look!

Last good song: Xpedition
Last good song that most people know of: TMBGITW

That's what he said when he was on BET "I rank 'the one' and 'come on' up there with my best work, but they won't be hits 'cause the stores ain't stocking them'

But I don't believe this. I think the songs are dead. They don't have the energy or emotion of his 80's stuff.
I think it's interesting that Prince, at the time, thought The Gold Experience, Emancipation and New power soul were all the albums he was born to make; but he performs very little of them live.

A good Prince song would find it's way into the mainstream. Look at 'TMBGITW' - he released that himself. In fact. that was the reason he ultimately left Warners, 'cause he felt he didn't need them. Now he complaining that he can't get hits without them!

True, but he was still relativily famous at the time, only three years after "Cream", his last no.1 single (which IMO is one of his WORST songs). Some of the stuff on TRC and Xpectation is up there with his 80s stuff, it's just that hardly anyone hears it.

and he also didn't just do it "on his own" -- he did it with Bellmark, who knew how to promote the hell out of a one-off single (their previous hit had been "woop there it is").

and there ARE stories of hundreds and thousands of copies of the single being bought up by Prince himself. wink

So far, so pleased could've been huge IMHO. All it really needed was a (timely) video

How anyone can think MBGITW is a "truly classic" song is beyond me.

it's catchy and romantic. the classics are usually simple.

It IS a classic though. The melody stuck after just one listen. A tell-tale sign...

Are you serious?? Where did you hear that?
I mean 'TMBGITW' was just a genuine smash hit. It's one of the only songs I can think of that would be a hit for whoever recorded it, at whatever point in history. 'Cream' wasn't a hit in UK and 'TMBGITW' was still his only number one there.
He was fairly famous, but not famous enough that people were buying/playing whatever he released, like in the 80's.
'My name is Prince', 'Sexy MF' and 'Pink Cashmere' all flopped in USA. Even around the time of 'TMBGITW' he still had loads of flops 'Let it go', 'Exodus', 'Chaos and Disorder', '1800-New-Funk' etc..

Depends how high we're setting the standard of greatness - i'd go with Last december, though I love Empty Room too. But he'll never beat, and doesn't often get within shouting distance of, IF I WAS UR GIRLFRIEND. that's greatness on a whole other level.

BTW, on ANY scale Lovesign is many many many miles away from greatness.

she loves me 4 me

Other than that not a lot of greatness since When 2 r in love

& yes I'm ready for all the arguments but you know I was there for the early albums and I'm sorry but it's gone downhill bigtime since 1990.
80s there was no 'filler' everything was at worst great (OK maybe not Ronnie talk to Russia)

Still buy everything still go to the gigs & ONA in London was great BUT...

That long back?? I really don't understand how that was such a big hit. I don't even rate it as an album track. I much prefer 'New power geneartion'
