I'm not sure how commercial they'd be but one angle could focus on him being a total workaholic & living the music (not just performing it, lol) & him being one of the first major artists to "remove" himself (so to speak) from the industry & go independent. Even if it's detrimental in some ways, I think it's pretty brave.

Another angle could take you from sexual to sanctified.

These are pretty obvious but no matter the angle, I'd really want to look at his entire journey. It'd be a 2 hour piece at least...

there are two TV production companies doing research for a docu. do the bbc buy these things in ever... obviously i know that channel 4 do...
