Controversy - an all-time classic album, or not? For me, EVERY moment on this record - including the ending to Do Me, Baby and the quirky Ronnie Talk To Russia - is essential listening. Prince's mixing is more imaginative than on either Dirty Mind or 1999, and the funk is tighter. I think it's overlooked by the 'normal' Prince fan but the funk hardcore know where it's at; we're an exclusive minority. What do y'all think - a masterpiece or not? Additionally, are there any stories behind this album/era? Any info. would be appreciated!

I've never thought of Controversy in context to Parade but in some ways they are complete opposite sounds. In Controversy, it doesn't feel that the Prince sound is diluted by other influences; the album feels black, as opposed to black and white. Does that make any sense?

Controversy aight... I do understand the funk of it all, but I always like the self titled Prince album... I wanna be ur lover funky, Sexy Dancer 2 funky, I feel 4 u, 3 funky, but on the controversy lp there's jack u off, let's work , sexuality and private joy... put all these track on one album that would've been a funky legendary record... Giving this a listen after the whole electroclash dance music craze over the past couple of years, "Controversy" sounds right at home with anything by Peaches, Adult., or any of the other electro pop bands du jour. It's not just classic funk, it's classic electronic pop. | |
