Something in the water, prototype for...

Personally i love something in the water and many don't make the realtion unitl it's pointed out to them but if you check out the drum programming it's really the first drum n bass track to have ever been done...I think Prince is responsible for a lot of the directions that electronica has gone in, shit he really was the first to bring the drum machine to people's attention (well besides all of the kraftwerk fans). Another example of his genius nod nod nod

go back a little further to Controversy, and you have House music in it's infancy.

Would it be fair to say that?

Any minute now some geek's gonna log on and tell us who was the first to use bass n drum track. Let's save you the trouble. It doesn't matter. What matters is what was done with it. Bottom line: Something in The Water is a helluva song.

true it's a helluva song...i don't mind waiting on that geek geek to tell me who originated this style..i like triva like that, but personally i think for 1982 the track was pretty innovative and though Prince didn't explore this stlye futher he may have stumbled across it first

I love this song, its a great example of up-tempo electronica. But, that straight 4/4 rythym coupled with the pulsating synth line is more akin with house/techno than drum'n'bass!

This is no slur, I'm agreeing with you in principle - its a great, innovative track, its just not related to the style you chose.

The "who did it first?" debate would be almost impossible to settle. Styles develop and grow, they take time and, often, it is not one singular individual who breaks that style. You can have an individual sound, but a musical style is more a collective movement than anything.

But then, people will go as far back as 1972 and say that Pink Floyd's "On The Run" from Dark Side of the Moon was (in)directly responsible for house/electronica!

True I could name a lot of pioneers of electronica from Sun Ra to eno, i was really focusing on that rhthym though it's not drum n bass by any means, but if he were to just let that beat go without the pause it's tempo not the time signature would make it drum n bass that's all i was trying to convey, a lot of drum in bass is in 4/4...well anyways it's a killer track nuff said. I do agree with your theory om music concepts and various artist are responsible for a collective movement... demon demon demon demon

Anyone heard the rehearsal of "Something In The Water" for the 1984 birthday gig? That was a cool version...slower tempo...the riff sounds different...

This version is hot like hell. Unfortunately I've got it only on tape and in a VERY bad quality. Somebody knows where can I get a better copy?

I think Prince played a very small part in the evolution of electronic and house musics.

There were tons of people already using drum machines and computers - Prince was influenced by those acts - like Soft Cell, Depeche Mode, and of course, The Human League cool
