The thing is,Paisley Park Records started off with a few really good acts and alot of promise...Sheila E.,The Family and Mazarati. Those three artists released great albums. But by the late 80s,Prince began signing questionable acts like Dale Bozzio,Good Question and Taja Sevelle. These acts weren't especially talented and their albums sucked, for the most part. Then in the early 90s,Prince continued his tradition of signing talentless people (Carmen Elektra,TC Ellis, etc) and it was obvious that the label wasn't gonna make it.You really can't blame Warners for shutting down the label in early 1994.So much money was being wasted (they spent over $2 million promoting the Carmen Elektra CD,which sold about five copies...lol).

what about Good Question That was a pretty bad album. Paisley Park Records rejected Warrant because Prince said the lead singer couldn't dance. Warrant went on to have million selling albums on the rock charts. Paisley Park Records failed because the label signed acts based on their looks and image instead of on their talent and hit-making potential. Prince really missed out on signing some truly talented artists. In 1987,he was planning to sign Toni!Tony!Tone! but according to the guys in that band,"he kept fronting" so they signed elsewhere and went on to sell millions of records. In 1992,Prince was also given the opportunity to sign Meshell Ndogecello but somehow she wound up at Madonna's Maverick label instead. In 1986,he signed Bonnie Raitt but nothing ever came of this deal so she left and went on to make an incredible comeback with the 'Nick Of Time' album.

I actually liked the Taja Seville album. Used to listen to it back-to-back with BrownMark's debut on Motown. "Love Is Contagious" was a top ten hit (or maybe even number 1) in the UK! Personally I think there were some awful signings BUT the ones that were good would have fared a whole lot better with proper promotion: Sheila E The Time The Family Jill Jones Prince should have honoured his agreement with Rosie Gaines and concentrated on her album instead of Carmen Electra - what an idiot! 'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

I agree with you about promoting the good acts.In fact,Prince's lack of promotion for The Family is the main reason that Paul Peterson left the band.Could you imagine where that band could have went with proper marketing and promotion? Sheila E's third album is her best work, and deserved much more promotion than it received.

The bottom line is that Prince is a musician. It takes a special set of skills to run a successful record label.
The artists that Prince let slip through his fingers while he poured time and resources into Carmen Electra, Taja Seville, TC Ellis, etc. is an embarassing statement on his judgement skills. Look at the acts that NPG Records has worked with -- DVS, Millenia, the Blackshire Brothers, Fonkay Baldheadz? The only reason any of those acts got in the door at Paisley Park is because they're all either the "friend of a friend" or a former band member.

But really Prince did alright. What artists as big as Prince launched acts as large as Sheile E, The Time and Vanity (to a lesser extent). Let's at least give him the credit he deserves. He had a chance at His own Berry Gordy Motown but didn't have the patience IMHO to make it happen.
Man that would have been amazing, you are so right. Jam & Lewis are one the most successful producers in the world. As you say, just imagine if instead of falling out with ex-protoges Prince had actually nurtured them and them watch them grow (proud that he had launched them). You *could* have ended up with Janet Jackson on Paisley Park! No way Warner Bros would have shut it down then. 'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Remember her 1988 song "Simon,Simon"? She had a quirky style, but this song had a good groove.Too bad the lyrics(and Dale's vocals) sucked.
