I was 9 listening to our local radio station with my favorite cousin who was 3 years older. The song...I wanna be your lover.
That one song kept me hooked as it was the only Prince song I ever heard until 1999 came out. I was 12 and videos were first airing on TV so I saw Prince and Little Red Corvette & 1999 plus my cousin went out and bought the tape. This is when I became baptized by the funk. I used to lock myself in my cousins closet and listen to that tape over and over from the time I got home from school until the time my mom came home from work. I've been hooked ever since... 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Moderator | I was about 4 my Dad was watching MTV and the 1999 video came on,I watched about half of it then i ran out of the room screamming cuz i was scared of the "thing" on TV. I don't remember any of this but my family swears it's true! In spite of the cost of living, it's still popular. |

The first time I stood up and took notice was Partyman during the Batman film only I didn't know it was Prince.
I reall discovered Prince on late night VH1 (There must of been an advert break in the porn or something) and I saw the video to Sexy MF. I thought it was so cool that I went to a second hand store to look 4 it. I couldn't find the single so I bought the . My collection built from there. NOTE: THIS ACCOUNT IS NOW CLOSED. I remember when I was 6 seeing the cover of Lovesexy at my cousins place and thinking "huh?". I was also obsessed with the Batman movie for years (without realising Prince did the songs!). Then in late '98, I watched a Prince video clip compilation (cause there was nothing else on TV, and I read that my hero at the time, Miles Davis, had liked him, so I watched it!). After seeing the 1999 clip, I was hooked! Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

how old were you? what were your first impressions? what made you finally go buy your first prince record? I was eight years old when I first heard Prince. I didn't see a picture of him until I was about thirteen, when videos were first played. My first impression was that he was weird, but I was weird, so I really liked that. I didn't get my first Prince album until I was seventeen. We were dirt poor so I got Sign O' The Times as a graduation present.

I was about 9 or 10 and i had seen the video for Controversy and sexuality...blew my mind then i realized that private joy and let's work playing on the raido all this time was him...but after seeing the little red corvette video i was hooked for life...i remember our stereo got stolen and i wanted to hear theat song so much that i call my local radio staion and requested that song to b played (i don't know, i guess just knowing that they were playing this song would make me feel better even though i couldn't hear it) and it just so happened that i was like the tenth caller in some contest and they were playing little red corvette the moment i called so i guess they were talking to me live on the radio and they were like what radio station are you listening too? I was like click
i know that's a pathetic story isn't it? [This message was edited Mon May 12 16:11:30 PDT 2003 by richb8]

I noticed him but I didn't notice him...I think it was when he was on Solid Gold, and all I remember was seeing the most beautiful man I had ever seen ,actually all I remember was THOSE EYES, and I was entranced for a few moments...then it was over, and I went on ahead about my business and forgot about him until a few years later when PR came out. Where were you when you first heard or saw prince? The first time I heard Prince was on the radio singing "I Wanna Be Your Lover" when I was in the car on a hot summer day with my two cousins, my aunt and uncle, driving down to the beach.
How old were you? I was 16. What were your first impressions? I liked it a lot! I remember my two cousins saying they liked it as well, and my cousin Jeff remarking that Prince was "cool". What made you finally go buy your first prince record? I didn't buy my first Prince record until much much later, after I went to see the movie "Purple Rain". That was what started the craziness about Prince music for me. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

I can't remember the first time I saw Prince (I guess I liked him ever since birth) but I do remember thinking that he was one of the most beautiful people I've ever seen. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

A home watching MTV---the "1999" video how old were you? 11...I think what were your first impressions? I thought he was cute (naturally), and very strange---in a good way I thought his backing band were cool as hell too what made you finally go buy your first prince record? Well, after seeing the video I asked my dad to buy "that new Prince record", being the music freak he was he knew exactly what I was talking about, so one day he came home with it and I listened to it. Then, since all vinyl never left the familly room, I decided to save up my allowance and buy the tape. ~KiKi

I've told this story before, but since you asked...
The first time I noticed Prince's music I was I think 11 years old...the song was "I Wanna Be Your Lover." I loved the song, but did not know who sang it until YEARS later. The first time I noticed Prince was at an Air Force Base Exchange, in "West" Germany. My father was looking at the sound equipment in the music/electronics section of the exchange and I was looking at the albums. I picked up an album with this guy on it. He has wild hair and no shirt. Just this guy against a blue background. My dad walked up behind me and said "Don't even think about it." I was about 12 or 13, so I didn't. I put the album down and walked away. I didn't really start listening to Prince until I was 15. At the same Air Force Base they had LRC and 1999 in the juke box. I played each song at least once when we'd go there. Still didn't put it all together until my older sister bought 1999. I listened to it once and went and got my own copy. I've never looked back. I'm firmly planted in denial

I first heard Prince at home on my radio: Soft and Wet.
I first saw Prince when one of my girlfriends brought his picture to school--the one with the Afro and leather jacket. I was 16 years old. My first impression of the song was that I hadn't ever heard a man with that kind of falsetto (other than the Sylistics) but I thought the song was pretty funky. After I saw the PICTURE, though, I was "stone in love" with him! I didn't actually buy a Prince record until Dirty Mind. By then, I was in college and that was THE party record. And truly scandalous at the time. . .

I first noticed Prince when MTV first started and they played 1999 and LRC be4 that I knew the name...I knew some of the older songs but never connected them all to him til I put a face to it all I guess I was about 16...I even remember having this old LP that I even still have called SoundWaves...it was one of them K-tel records...used to play "I wanna be ur Lover" all the time and never even knew it was him til years later...LOL
My first impression of Prince was...OMG...why exactly is he dressed that way?? but I thought he's really cute and his eyes were the first thing that caught me I was hooked by the time Purple Rain came out...there was no turning back...I am still trying to explain my obsession to myself...but no matter what Prince does I will always love the music

1984 or 1985, I bought the Purple Rain album for When Doves Cry beacuse I couldn't get the synth motif out of my head, taped the album and played it in my walkman which I wore day and night. The real first impression of the man himself came when I rented PR on video. I SO wanted to be as cool as the Kid! (mind you, being white, 12 and wearing braces, I didn't get very close. But by the time I was 13 i WAS playing the guitar)

The first time that I ever saw Prince was in the video for 'Gett Off'. I was like, "what is this?" after that I realized that he was the same guy who did 'Kiss' and 'When Doves Cry'. It was all around the time that we got Mtv at my house and I was able to see the old videos as well as the new ones. I didn't buy my first album until I was 19 and a sophomore in college. It was the Hits 2. After that I bought the Hits 1 and then I just fell in love and kept on buying more. I still have a long way to go though.
Two interesting points: At first i didn't realize that Prince was short. I Just thought that all the women he was around were really tall. (This was when I was 10) I used to go to this retreat every summer when I was in high school and we used to sing 'Starfish and Coffee' and 'Raspberry Beret' ALL THE TIME. I found out that 'Raspberry Beret was a Prince song before I became a Prince fan but I didn't know about 'Starfish and Coffee' until last summer when I bought 'Sign O the Times'. I was like WOW.

I first noticed Prince on the radio when some guy praised "1999". I was 13 then.
My first impression was: nice sound but I simply did not know who that guy was. I was hooked in 1985 with ATWIAD (after I completely ignored the Purple Rain era because everything that is so much hyped was and still is suspicious to me).

where were you when you first heard or saw prince?
My older sister had brought home "Controversy." how old were you? 8 years old what were your first impressions? I thought with a name like "Prince" and by the look of the newspaper articles on the cover and song titles like "Ronnie Talk to Russia" my sister was on some ol politcal radical type thing. Listening to "Do Me Baby" tho... the falsetto and the sex scene at the end was little too much for my 8 year old mind to handle. At best I thought Prince was a freak; at worst I thought he was gay. what made you finally go buy your first prince record? Hearing "When Doves Cry" 3 years later on the radio... the opening guitar solo and screams that panned from left to right to left on stereo headphones of my walkman... the linn drum beat with the rim shot on the half... and no bass line with the closest thing to bass being Prince singing in low register in harmony with his mid and high voice. I had never heard anything like that before. It was intriguing, interesting, and I had to listen to it over and over again just to take it all in. "That...magic, the start of something revolutionary-the Minneapolis Sound, we should cherish it and not punish prince for not being able to replicate it."-Dreamshaman32

I was at home with the Radio on and they played the song 1999, I liked it...ALOT, I could not buy the tape though, don't ask, it was my sister's fault. I sat around the radio in as much spare time as possible, waiting for it to play then I got smart and recorded it. how old were you? 13 years of age what were your first impressions? The music (song) was great then I saw him sometime later on Television, the video of 1999 actually. I was like, "oh, what the?" That purple coat and boots he had on kept my interest. what made you finally go buy your first prince record? [b] All the hoopla about the Purple Rain Movie, seeing it on TV, hearing about it so forth and so on. Since my parents would not allow me to go see it due to its rated "R" status or even go to the concert (my Brother claimed he had tickets, teasing me about it) I went out and bought the tape, of course my Father nearly lost his mind when I mistakenly allowed the song "Darling Nikki" to play all the way through. I grew up in a strict but loving household.
