Prince album study #2, Chaos And Disorder

Now do not laugh, you all know this is a good rock and roll party record, so don't deny it; and if you do deny it, you must not care much for good rock and roll music. Prince could have been more balsy, but that's another story.

For a throw away aimed at pissing off Warners, this is pretty get down and rawk. He let's his hair down and just kicks over the amp. Good for him. This album's biggest defender was none other than Spin magazine.

People complain that the songs aren't that great, considering his past accomplishments, but just enjoying decent and groovy rock music isn't a crime. Not everything Prince does has to be high art. Rock and roll has always been originally about having fun and letting it all hang loose; no matter what may get in yo face.

---

Chaos And Disorder--Odd that he used the outro to most live versions of Peach to use as the main riff to this song, but it does crunch realll good. good lyrics about how words have changed, and about how cynical we have become in the new world. He talks about how innocent we once were, and how now we are way too serious, and society is basically crumbling. Great rock vibe and marvy guitar.

I Like It There--A bit of a Lenny Kravitz vibe, but a wonderful almost punky riff. Nice vocals and screeches. Guitar solo is sparse but wicked. Also one of Princes more profound (?) Statements: "What can I say, Shaekspeare hasnt said before?" True. but rock on lil man.

Dinner With Delores--No chorus, but nice little ditty. Run of the mill a bit, but has a good laid back vibe.

The Same December--Great little pop song. Nice rock vibe. good lyrics--What's not to like?

Right the Wrong--Country rock? It grows on you. I personally like it. Means he can stretch when need be. There is no music form he cannot tackle, no matter how many so called fans he turns off.

I Rock, Therefore I Am--Except for the awful, insulting rapping this is pretty good. Too bad this was'nt sent to radio.

Into The Light/I will, Great chorus on the first song. Nice slow vibe, but with a rock twist. I Will is pretty and very much like an emancipation song from disk 2. The guitar solo is great.

Zannalee--Minnesota cop accents get me chuckling, since I was born there. They really do talk like that. lol. Decent blues number, even though it is a bit short, and the lyrics are pretty lame.

Dig U Better Dead--Best song on the album, bar none. Great music, Wonderful chorus, Decent experimental, electronic vibe with the music. One of Princes better songs of the 90's.

Had U, also very short and not really a song. But what's there is pretty neat. Could have been a great full song, if Prince cared..lol.

But a decent album; not ground breaking or amazing, but it does make the heart beat fast. For open minded fans only.

oh yeah and I agree on that Had U comment, I could feel that getting amazing if it would have been a bit longer.. the lyrics remind me of "erase me" by NIN

Wow... prepare to be bashed for these statements.

I'm ashamed to admit, but I actually grooved to these two back in 1996!

And how can you not like any rap that mentions Kirby Puckett!

I love this album.

That's right, I said it:

I LOVE THIS ALBUM.

At the time, it was just what I needed from Prince: no skits like on TGE, no meandering around like on Come, no half-assed attempts at hip-hop like on O+>...just straight up rock'n'funk, pissed-off, in yo' face, Dirty Minded jams. Short, sweet and nasty with a FUCK YOU at the end.

HELLZ YEAH!!!

Now. Was I expecting a new SOTT or 1999 when I plopped this baby into the stereo for the first time? Of course not. I knew it would be the sonic equivalant of Prince flipping the bird to WB, and it was. It was sloppy, it was quickly done, it was pissy and it was silly more often than not. But it was also the sound of Prince not giving a damn WHAT he sounded like, and the result was like DAAAMN!!! to me.

Do I want all Prince's music to sound like this? Heck, no. I love his airy, happy albums, I love his navel-gazing dime store philosopher albums, I love his poppy-brainless albums, and I ESPECIALLY love the jazz noises he's been making most recently. But pissed off and dirty? Yeah, I'll take some of that, too.

Hate on this album all you want, I'll defend it till I'm purple in the face.

(And for the record, over the past few years I've gotten to really enjoy TGE and Come...just sayin'.)

eye edit, therefore eye am

EXCELLENT ALBUM!!!

"CHAOS and DISORDER" ROCKS!
The opening number gets yo motor reving and "I Like it There" puts it in2 full throttle. Listen 2 his screams! MAN!!! Listen 2 that guitar!

Then he takes us in2 "Dinner With Deloris" just like that! A fantastic little pop number with hilarious and kinda dark lyrics.

The WHOLE album flows well.

GREAT job PRINCE!

I've always said it, It is one of my fave albums except for 'Had U' at the end. What about if he had actually put his heart and soul into it??? It would have been 10 times better. Ah well, we can always dream!

Remember, he only did this album to get out of his contract, so to him, it was a mere throwaway. Pretty good throwaway. Could have been worse, believe me.

Lou Reed recorded a double album of feedback noise to get out of his contract.

Yes, it could have been MUCH worse.

In the liner notes of this album it says material was intended for private use hmm I think it was his last blow in the war with warner bros nana ...This album was intended to piss of the execs at warner pissed and while doing that he disappointed a lot of fans sigh ..I don't care how much any one defends this album it's like a mcdonalds hamburger 90% filler but people still eat it burger and just like this album the hardcore fans still find it edible drooling
