Yup - I used Emanciaption as one of my reference discs last night, to test out my new, audiophile power-amp.
BWM is one of the songs I use, especially for the wonderful bass outro! Its a wonderful Prince song that encapsulates him as perfectly as the song encapsulates his career. The other songs I played last night that really grabbed my attention (especially as I was hearing details never heard before) were Somebody's Somebody and My Computer. MC, for me, is a career highlight for Prince. The dense, funk-break outro is pure genius and I could listen to that forever! And one thing I noticed last night, that I hadn't picked up on before was the really slowed down voice that says "My Computer" which occurs after every time he sings ..."looking for a site", you then get this very electronic, slowed-down sample of Prince saying that - I always thought before is was just some cool sound-effect. ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

"Big White Mansion... Top of the Roooad"!
Talk about a happy cool song! There something about driving thru Chanhassen up Highway 5 to Paisley Park with that song playing that gets me fired up!

I am kinda re-discovering Emancipation at the moment and am getting into it a lot more than when it came out. Songs I hated when it came out (Mr Happy, I Can't Make U Love Me, Savior, amoung others) I am really diggin now. This seems to happen a lot when it comes to Prince albums. However, I have always loved Big White Mansion.

That's not Prince, it's Kate Bush. Check the booklet, she contributed to this track. She's on the backingvox but he computerised it and distorted her vocal so much that it's very hard to tell who it is without the songcredits. But I agree with you that My Computer is a damn fine song and I think it's the best thing on Emancipation. People r dissing it to quickly because they don't like the AOL vox at the beginning and end of it. But the song is brilliant and the lyrics are very honest and close to home. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Istenszek - that's cool, man!
Heh - I wasn't talking about Kate. I have always been well aware of her presence and, believe me, my hi-fi was not that bad before as to not be able to hear it!!! Her vocal is almost the entire length of the song, its just really brought up in the mix as we go! What I'm talking about is a bit more subtle (and it is Prince here) - just think about how the music goes when he sings the line "I scan my computer, looking for a site"..right after he finishes the line there is, what can best be described as a mechanical, almost grinding, robotic (help??!!!) sound that is 3 notes, one, then up a tone, then down an octave and forms the main riff in that bar. I dunno if plenty of people have realised it before, but it is a warped Prince voice slowed to say, in three distinct syllables (with the notes) "Com...pew..terrr" Erm, anyway, this is kinda microscoping detail, eh? But, it has always interested me just how many techniques and ideas that are hidden in layers upon layers in his tunes and some, like this one, I find endlessly fascinating! ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

White Mansion has that great synth line. That is why Emancipation is so good, because it has a different way of looking at synth sounds. It is slick, to be sure but lovely. All you others say Hell Yea!!

Hmm, I've missed that one this far but I'm gonna pull out Emancipation again tonight and give it a good listen on my headphones. I'll probably become obsessed again with this song and listen to it nonstop for a week. YOUR FAULT! and true love lives on lollipops and crisps
