People PLEASE help settle this debate - Correct lyrics to Tamborine

See the debate thread below between Jestyr and I.

I say Prince is saying "Troubling"
Jestyr says Prince is singing "Tamborine"

I'm sure the masses will agree with Jestyr but I wanted to know if I'm the only one who hears the lyrics correctly smile

The song is about Masterbation

...all alone by my self me and I play my tamborine...Troubling!

Jestyr said

Is that what he says? Sounds like "Trampoline" to me. lol

Supafunky said

Nope, it's "troubling". Listen carefully and you will hear it.

Troubling as in being troubled at having to play by himself and not with someone else.

Jestyr said

Oh my God. Talk about reading too much into it. Someone has guilt issues.

SupaFunky said

so which do you prefer? Play alone or with someone else?

SupaFunky said

I have only read into it what's there smile And as far as guilt, I have none whether I'm alone or with someone else. I love shaking the Tamborine horny

SupaFunky said

He does sing "Troubling". I can hear it and if you listen carefully you will too. It totally makes sense in context to the song.

oh my god here you are prettiest thing in life I've ever seen
close my eyes what's it like what's it like inside your tamborine
oh my god there I go, falling in love with a face in magazine (uh-oh not again)
all alone by myself me and I play my tamborine

Troubling!

Trampoline makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, however Troubling does.

Jestyr said

No 'grinder, he doesn't sing 'troubling' or 'trampoline', either. A line like that would be included in the lyrics which are listed in the CD booklet and on the album sleeve. However, a background vocal repeating the title phrase does not need to be printed. I know it might sound like he's saying something else, but he is singing 'tamborine' with a higher and faster counterpoint vocal also singing 'tamborine' and those overlaps and the goofy phrasing he uses, cause it to sound like it's another word.

SupaFunky said

You are waaay off on this one. There are a million examples where the lyrics to a Prince song does not match those in the booklet.

You need to go back and listen because there is clearly a TR sounding word. And "Troubling" makes even more sense in context to this:

Lonely lonely nights...Troubling
Lonely lonely nights...Troubling

Troubling as in being lonely and having noone to play with but yourself. I have this pegged so hard. You need to open up your mind and let the truth flow. I'm telling you I'm on the mark with this one smile

Jestyr said

It sounds like a "tr.." sound because he is slurring his vocals to exemplify his aggravation. The background vocals repeat the title phrase throughout the entire song. You're gonna believe what you want anyway, but this is one case where you couldn't be more off the mark.

We should be sure to remember to ask him next time we get a chance.

SupaFunky said

I agree that he is singing tamboring in the background throughout the song but that TR sound is no slur. And why would he have to slur to exemplify his aggravation when he's already exemplifying his aggravation by telling you he's troubled at having to be alone.

Lonely lonely nights...Troubling

You are stuck hearing what you have heard the whole time. Free your mind and perhaps your ass will follow smile

Jestyr said

Who's stuck? You are, brother. You made this little thing up in your own mind and are now completely intransigent about it. Your argument above is totally cyclical and carries no logic whatsoever. If he is attempting to exemplify his aggrevation (not exagerration), why would he have to limit it to one way? Couldn't he slur his vocal AND talk about being lonely? My point is he is NOT using the word 'troubling' - not that he ISN'T troubled by being alone and having to play his tamborine. (which is what he is singing in the background)

I've seen examples of official lyrics being misprinted, but generally they are entire lines or portions of lines changed (chaos and disorder comes to mind because the original lyric printed in NPG magazine said something about downing a 40 and he sings something about 40 days of being played ain't proud). But really - logically - why would the printer leave out one word in that song when the rest of the lyrics for the entire record are all perfectly correct?

SupaFunky said

Man...

I corrected the word exageration to aggravation. I typed it up so fast that I typed the wrong word... Still does not negate my point.

My argument is completely and totally logical. What is more logical that he's singing Trampoline (doesn't make any sense whatsoever) or Tamborine (which I would give you if not for the clear sound of TR) or Troubling (especially since you can hear this is what he sings when he breaks down the word Tra-bo-ling)

When I first heard this line correctly I was listening to the album with a friend of mine and it was exactly like an epiphany because we both heard it correctly at the same time and both turned to each other and said "Troubling!" I suppose my friend is delusional too...

You concede that he could be troubled at spending lonely nights by himself...Why is it so hard to believe that he is saying Troubling? I can't believe people are being so hard headed on this.

For what it is worth, the lyrics in the sheet music book for 'Around The World in A Day' (Warner Bros Publications Inc.) are:

Tamborine

Oh my God, here u are,
Prettiest thing in life I've ever seen.
(whistle)
Close my eyes, what's it like?
What's it like inside your tamborine?

Oh my God, there I go,

These are the lyrics as transcribed to accompany the sheet music, and include background vocals and lyrics not included in the lyrics detailed on the album sleeve.

The sheet music book also includes the lyrics for the whole album (as presented in the gatefold sleeve of the album) at the front, allowing comparison.

Nice try too - but I actually gave it away when I started off by saying 'for what it is worth...'

I'm not stating what I hear. I'm not stating categorically it's one thing or another that he sings.

I'm just copying verbatim from the lyric book ('Tamborine' is on pp 24-30) which also says:

(Bars 63 - 64) 'Oh yeah, too bad'.

Regardless, this lyric book is clearly wrong. Might have been transcribed by an outside company by ear. Even 'grinder would admit that 'nyah nyah' part was incorrect.

Yes, I agee that they got the Nyah Nyah part wrong. But I am glad to see they transcribed Troubling correctly! evillol

And this proves that I'm not making shit up. At least one transcription company agreed with what I am hearing smile

Scans?

I've given you the page numbers, I've given you the bars it features in. I give the catalogue number below.

I'm not saying the lyric book is correct.

I'm just saying 'for what it is worth'.

Yes, the lyric book could well be wrong (I never claimed it was correct). But your argument doesn't mean the inaccuracy you have spotted makes 'troubleing' wrong.

1. It could be transcribed by someone else: (great spot - these books often are - Prince doesn't tend to sit down and write the notes out for Warner Bros. Publications.)

2. It could be transcribed by ear.

That's exactly what you and Supa are doing.

(Sometimes the person who transcribes the lyrics and music is credited in the official books - this one was printed in the USA and has the identification VS1235 on the spine but no reference to the transcriber.)

2. The transcriber stated 'oh yeah' instead of 'nyah nyah'.

If 'Oh yeah' is incorrect it simply invalidates those specific lyrics and challenges the credibility of the transcriber's accuracy in transcribing other lyrics, or the printer who typeset it, or the proof reader, or whoever was in the supply chain for producing the lyrics. It doesn't make 'troubleing' incorrect - nor does it make it right.
