Do you consider Clams on the shore to be souls in progress? Like Prince.
Or does 'Animal kingdom' make you want to machete the nearest cow and stick it between 2 peices of Bread? Furthermore, are you a Veggie because of Prince?

I never understood what the "clams on the shore...souls in progress" lyric meant. But I do love the song "Animal Kingdom", probably in part because I love animals. But I'm not a vegetarian, it's hard to give up meat when you were raised on it. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

I've been a veggie for a decade and a half - it's not something I preach about anymore, it's just a part of who I am, like being left-handed or brown-eyed. Sometimes I'm only reminded that I'm a vegetarian when I'm eating with people who don't know me very well, and they make a point of mentioning how there's no meat on my plate.
As people who are outspoken about vegetarianism/veganism go, I think there are many folks out there way more obnoxious about it than Prince. The only time I get up-in-arms on the topic is when people hear I'm a veggie and feel they have to automatically make some stupid joke about how they like a big, bloody steak. It's not funny - it's disrespectful and offensive, and completely unnecessary. The way I live my life has nothing to do with wanting to alter the way you live yours - so knock it off!

I've been a veggie for about eight years. When people ask about it, I just tell them that I don't like to eat meat because I like animals. If I had a dime for every "so do I... on my plate", I'd be a rich man by now. While I won't get into an argument about this, it does hurt.
I try to respect everyone's opinion and choices in life and not get too preachy. But it really breaks my heart to think of the the bio-industry treats animals. I'm very grateful to be alive and free, and I wish every creature could be at least for a while.

Dig it. I quit eating meat about twelve years ago, and was pretty militant about it throughout my adolescence. I couldn't stand the sight or smell of meat, and felt the need to lecture on the disgusting truths of factory farming and meat production and consumption, I could go on and on. I've mellowed out in my old age, though, and just live and let live. I've learned that if they didn't ask, people generally didn't want to fucking know - that goes for most subjects. As for clams on the shore being souls in progress, I can't say for sure. I do consider grubs under a rock to be beings on the journey to enlightenment. But that's another can of worms. what about the clams on the shore? sould in progress here come the fisherman soul no more It's to do with reïncarnation, coming back as a higher being every time you come back. You know, going from a rock to a human being through the passing of however many physical 'bodies'it takes to reach that level of ultimate enlightenment. It's a branch of some kind of religion. My ex used to talk about it quite a lot. But that was at the time he used to set the dinnertable on fire just because I forgot to get cheese for his sandwiches, so I didn't really listen to it that closely. Anyway, the souls in progress is just what it says, souls busy experiencing another stage of gestation, before moving on to the next, higher level/lifeform. coldclamsreachingforyournipplewiththeirtentaclesedit [This message was edited Thu May 8 10:31:02 PDT 2003 by IstenSzek] and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Thanks for the answers everyone.I guess nobody was inspired by Prince to become a veggie.

"Souls in progress" is just a reincarnation reference. If somebody thinks life forms return after death then why not as a clam?

Would they be fonky, fonky blue-cheese lyrics?!
I think a little too much is being read in to the clam lyric. It is not anything to do with re-incarnation in my opinion. He is simply saying that the clams are alive "souls in progress" = living beings, until, of course, once they are fished and killed by the fisherman. Prince's point is that he won't eat any living animal, which includes blue cheese because the mould is a living organism. I think its a fairly cool song, though a little trite. It is yet another example of Prince being able to sing about anything he wants and make it interesting. ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...
