I'm confused! I always thought this (BWM) was one of those weak and annoying moments on Emancipation - over-produced, slick, synth-heavy, boring, no groove, no soul, no funk, no creativity. AM I (almost) ALONE HERE?

(Oh, and I always hated the capitalist message implicit in the song - no wonder some1 who thinks driving in a car with "girls" - plural - is cool would like it lol)
"We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

"That's becuase we're soulless auttomatons"

wasitgood4u - Don't be!

Perhaps for you, you don't like the song. That's fine, but I have to dis-agree with how you substantiate that opinion;

Over-produced? Compared to others on the album, this one gets it about right.

Slick - well, wouldn't disagree with that. But, I'd say it is also whimsical.

Synth-heavy - hmmm. Bass heavy yes, lovely constant guitar refrain adding airiness, and embellished by synths. The main synth is the high-pitched strings, most of the time in the verses its just guitar, atmosphere and samples.

Boring - the main, deep bass line, along with the picked/slapped funk bass is interesting enough to me and add on that coda - wow!

No groove - oh, come on! There is more groove just in that last coda than in Homer Simpson's sofa!

No soul - I get yearning, doubt, hope, consolation, wisdom, plenty of human emotions and conditions. Question is do you have a heart?

No funk - if you don't consider that coda funky, you need an education!

No creativity - this comment is as bad and loose as the last three and really has no bearing.

Oh, and I always hated the capitalist message implicit in the song - no wonder some1 who thinks driving in a car with "girls" - plural - is cool would like it )

But, ultimately, the mansion, the clothes, the success doesn't really mean anything to him. Yup, he dreamed of it all, but at the very end of the song (right after the "capitalists dream" of "Verasce, Gucci, they all want to do me") he sings, "But I'm not really happy" and ends it with, "Ah, maybe one day". The inference here is that all his success, money and the house are not what makes him happy.

Glad you enjoyed it Antoon.

MC is just one of those tunes where you have to immerse yourself in the cacophony of sounds woven in that tune - and the more you lose yourself in it, the more you find!
