Young folks - how do they see Prince ? I was just thinking about the fact that I was 16 in 1985 when ATWIAD made me a Prince fan.
People that are 16 nowadays, born in 1987, were too young to see his last real chart success (TMBGITW in 1994). Those people that live in a world of media hype + "home made" superstars by t.v. shows ... do they know Prince ? They only get bizarre news about bizarre fights Prince (whoever that is) is fighting against the record industry or about his latest release that has failed to make a comeback. Do they really connect anything with Prince ? What do you think ?

Most young people I've dealt w/ outside the org think Prince is gay(both in the homosexual sense and the upstate ny slang sense of being uncool), quite frankly. God they're morons.

My 18yr old Stepson seemingly hates Prince with a passion.Apparently Prince "screams all the time".I've told him he's displaying raw emotion (Like in The Beautiful Ones) This doesn't wash with him though for some reason.
He knows he's a talented artist but there are certain things about him he just doesn't like.He much prefers Eminem and MJ, who he considers a better vocalist and more commanding of Respect. [This message was edited Thu May 8 6:58:05 PDT 2003 by Marrk]

I've been a Prince fan since 1979 with "I Wanna Be Your Lover". I'm 32 and all the kids I talk to, being a teacher, all think that Prince is gay and completely weird. They have no idea of the musical history that Prince brings to music they listen to today, most of which is shit. Without Prince, they wouldn't have some of the artist they have today and they surely wouldn't have beats to steal from ala James Brown and Funkadelic. Prince will go down in music history as one of the greats, but with the younger audience today, it would take a kid who has a great love and appreciation of music as well as a history of music to find Prince and know the greatness of his music. Without my father I would have never known about Carlos Santana, James Brown and other greats. Listening to Prince, especially during 1985/86 when he was doing concerts rocking like James Brown really got me into James Brown's music. I even went to James in concert in 1986 and thought "Damn, so this is where Prince got his style." I let some of my students listen to some of my Prince and they are blown away when they hear some of the songs especially the ones where the beat been used in some rap!! They young'ens just need someone to pull the blinders of hip-hop and bubble gum music off their eyes and show them what a real musician can do!! __________________________________________________

great post!.agree 100% Like I said, My stepson knows Prince is a brilliant artist, and really likes some of his more upbeat stuff. But He's rather listen to Rap, RnB samples and beats than a song containing violas and chello. kinda sad.But he follows the crowd. Well I'm young so I've got a lot of friends who're around the same age as me.. when ever I tell them that I'm a huge hardcore Prince fan, they just look stupid at me and say ".. ohh didn't he have that hit back in the early 90's called THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GIRL IN THE WORLD" or they say something about him being gay and dressing up like a woman.. - What they dont see is how talented he is and how great he is.. I couldn't care less what they think, we're all different and I'm sure they'd dig him if they were a bit older!!.. At least there is some teen's (like me) left in the world who do apperciate his music!!

i'm 17 and Prince is one of the artists i respect the most (even if some of his music makes me cringe)
what i found out is that most young people don't actually KNOW prince. People remember a name they've heard somewhere before, an ugly guy who liked to scream a lot and some skinny dude with heels. well, thats the image most of my friends had until i forced them to watch video after video after video... my friend left the house with half of my collection of cds and all she could talk about for days was Prince this and Prince that... it is true however that people tend to get stuck on the "gay" image and don't bother putting Prince or his music into context...what can i say? Their loss... what i really don't understand in all of this however is that we,"young people", pride ourselves on being oh so tolerent and open minded yet we all end up listening to the same kind of crap

I'm 17, and I was recently 'outed' as a Prince fan in my physics 11 class. One girl who I sit next to, thought it was cool and seemed like she really liked Prince. She's a bit of a fan, but I doubt she's heard anything aside from the hits. There's that whole 80's comeback thing right now, so right now it's mostly cool to like Prince. Usually when people my age find out that I'm a fan, they respond with one of two things; either they say "Prince is cool. I like Purple Rain and 1999" or "Ew, how can you like that ugly flamer?!"

I guess it kind of depends on whom you surround yourself with. I'm 19 and quite a few of my friends really dig Prince and others are really blown away by his music sometimes. Of course I know the "he's gay" thing, too. I don't care much about that, though.
What happens quite often is "Prince? Uh, no, I like Outkast or The Roots." Well, go and ask THEM about him! Besides that, you can't really blame young people for knowing nothing of Prince besides TMBGITW. Of course it would be cool of them to dig deeper but you need a reason to do so. And he hasn't released any really striking singles in the 90s IMO, mainly ballads. Didn't want to bother you with all the typos: [This message was edited Thu May 8 8:55:32 PDT 2003 by calldapplwondery83]

i think what you will see is prince getting his propers by all of the young neo soul/rappers giving him his due respect.
everytime i hear/listen to an interview from a new r&b/rock act now they always seem to mention prince as an influence. i just heard floetry on the radio last week and they were talking about how thrilled they were to finally be able to meet prince because they respected his work so much. so i think slowly but surely the young bucks will start getting into our hero from the midwest.

all the young kids i know think he's corny. they don't think he's cool at all. he doesn't curse, he doesn't bling-bling (but lawd knows he tried for while, thank goodness that's over!), he doesn't create controversy. they just seem to think he's boring and old. i just laugh; they don't realize what they listen to is most likely directly influenced by prince (as well as many others, since nobody cares about originality anymo')

With the crap they (the kids) are listening to today, it would almost be an insult if they DID like Prince. There's a rift out in space, and it could be the door, but you know I'm not sure.

when I talk to Younger Folks coming along now about Him it depends on who you are talking to.He gets Props from Alot of Artists out now but the general Comment on His Music is that He was Badd back in the 80's or He is linked to that time period.Image thing has hurt him as well&also all the Music He has released has in some cases worked against him with some of the youth out now.also I think He took a Beaten for never really given it up to Sly,JB,Hendrix,etc.. early on in His career because when Rap/Hip-Hop Came along&Bum Rushed His thing it took it all the way back.but while alot of these Kids aren't gonna buy His Albums Per Se they still pay to go see Him Perform.but like with MJ: the Industry wants the Music they made&Created but on another Face.they don't want to Sell them no longer as them.they want it Sold as Usher or D'angelo,etc.. some Younger folks are hip to that but with teh Kind of Media we have nowadays&the way Music is down now it's a different game. mistermaxxx

Hmmn...
What I find strange is how teens place so much emphasis on the "prince is gay" thing. And here I thought that teenagers now a day were a bit more open-minded with the tired "gay" issue. Guess some things never change. By the way...my brother just turned 20, is straight, a jock, a ladies man, what have you and he's more of a Prince freak than I am. I introduced Prince to him when he was sixteen. He's a cool kid! His girlfriend (who I adore) can't get passed the image of Prince in high heels and make up. She'd rather listen to NSYNC and all...Poor girl...
