more embarrasing: "the james brown" performance or "the christ" performance?

say what you will about that freaky ass footage of him during JB's concert, but it doesn't begin to make me as embarrased for him as i was when he performed "the christ" at the NAACP awards

Rudy

"The Christ", with Prince letting LARRY GRAHAM sing half the song, was among his lowest moments. I think we witnessed an artist hitting rock bottom that night.

STAUROS, people!

When I've listened to the performance the crowd sounds like it's going crazy at the end, so someone must've enjoyed it???

BTW the strongest substance that Prince had taken, the night of the JB performance was Sherbert Fizz, complete with that Strawberry lollipop thing that comes with it. True.

the christ performance for those that have not seen it:

he was recieveing a lifetime achievment award if i recall correctly, and the crowd was crazy excited about him being there, and i in the watching on my tv at home audience was too. i get really whipped up when they introduced him and the NPg, and they started playing the intro to the cross... as this is one of my all time favorite P songs, i go apeshit.

suddenly he starts talking over the music saying things like "somebody lied about how somebody died" and explaining the concept of the stauros, which the JWs apparently believe Jesus was actually nailed to instead of a cross...

cue my confused and deflated reaction.

then he starts singing the song, but changes a lot of the lyrics around, and it is no longer called the cross, now it it the christ.

oh, it was painful. now i can't even listen to the cross anymore, cause it was suc and embarrasing experience

I thought "The Christ" performance on the NAACP performance was the bomb...full of spirit! It's just the haters that didn't like it cause he changed HIS song to fit HIS beliefs at the time...

That's a good point. Let go of your opinions people and Behold the Spirit of the performance.

You've just summoned a herd of Fams to come and rabidly defend how great that performance was and how happy they are he's found such a fantastic form of spirituality. The rest of us can just barf.

First of all, I'm not a "fam." I'm simply giving my opinion...and it's unbiased. The performance was very charged. It was obvious that he felt what he was playing. That is what music is all about.
You don't have to defend a performance that was obviously heartfelt...if I saw Justin Timberlake perform something with obvious passion, I would give him his due, even thought I dislike him.
I think those who don't like the performance are jaded by the whole JW thing, which is ridiculous, and obsessed to the point of not liking alything that is remotely in synch with their beliefs. I didn't read where anyone thought that they liked it or were haoppy because he found a new form of spirituality. But as an adult, I can I respect his beliefs, just as I respect a Muslim's faith, a Catholics, etc., etc. I mean, grow up. Seriously.

Chaka didn't help in the end either. I was overjoyed to see him, even though the performance had me wondering what had happened in his life at that point. I hadn't been into any of his works in the nineties until "Emancipation".

You can also add his "assless" pants performance of Gettoff as another embarrising performance. The song rocked though. Maybe the ladies will disagree with me.

The assless pants were so Prince. He can get away with anything like that. At least he could back then. I disagree with some of the comments about "the christ". Some of you may know from my previous posts that I hate anything to do with organized religion. I wish Prince had never met Larry, but I did not dislike this performance. I thought it was charged and very well done. Also, just for the record, I do not hate Larry or his JW beliefs, I just wish he had never been introduced to Prince. If this had never happened, we would still have our SMF around instead of the uncertain, phony JW he is so bent on becoming (at least until the next religion comes along that excites him).

it really wasn't the fact that he changed the lyrics to the song to reflect his new beliefs that bothered me so much as it was that as a song the new lyrics were not as good as the old ones.

to be completely honest, i really don't buy into the original version's religious belief either. but as as ong, it really really worked well. lyrically, the new version didn't work at all. "the christ?" it's not even proper english.

not to mention that, as mentioned earlier larry sang half the song. well, correct me if i am wrong, but prince recieved the award, not larry, correct? so wouldn't it make a lot more sense to have prince sing the song instead of having to speak over it to explain the new version so it made any sense to the people who aren't exposed to the whole stauros thing?

Correcting you...since it's Prince's song, and his award, I think that pretty much gave him the right to do as he wanted to on stage. When you get an award, and are allowed to perform your material on stage, I feel that should be your right as well.

I remember the "Living Color" show spoofing that performance in a skit once. It get mentioned again when Prince was on the Muppet show, so I guess he was cool with all the attention it got.

no.
