Prince’s Albums: Rank How Much You Want To See Super Deluxe Versions Of (1-10) With 1 being “I don’t at all care” and 10 being “Take My Money!!!!!” For You: 3 Would be interesting to hear his early stuff. His first efforts at professional recordings. His first ideas. Prince: 7 Dirty Mind: 10 Controversy: 9 1999: Already have this…albeit incomplete… Purple Rain: 10 Around The World In A Day: 5 Parade: 10 Sign O’ The Times: Already have this… Lovesexy: 6 Batman: 4 Diamonds & Pearls: Already have this… The Symbol Album: 4 The Gold Experience: 8

If all of these had a SDE. Take my money 💰 Sure I'd prefer an album over an another. I'll take what I can get I will take my place, In the great below

For me, its hard to rank anything relatively low (below a 7 or 8) because Prince seemed really comfortable with creating and holding on to or playing with a creation for YEARS before release. For instance, there COULD be some great Around the World in a Day "concept" stuff created between 1999 and Purple Rain; there COULD be some great Symbol album "first pass" stuff between Lovesexy and Batman.

For me, I want "Lovesexy" and "Batman" the most. . Next would be "Dirty Mind" and "Parade". . Then "Controversy" and "The Love Symbol".

I'd personally want or take anything and everything. But there are periods where I don't have much faith about what could be in the vault, quality-wise, going by the outtakes that have leaked so far. Something like a "Batman" SDE doesn't sound like something I'd be mad about I'm afraid. . Then again, I'll question again whether the super deluxe edition concept is the best avenue to release vault material. Something that was recorded in X year doesn't necessarily belong to whatever album that was released at the time.

I don't care about SDE. I want Vault series.

Meanwhile, while we've been talking FOR ONE DECADE about what we would like to hear from the Vault, years are just passing by and 0 is being released.
The only things we get from the Estate are a few words & vague promises telling us how hard their job is and NO MUSIC AT ALL.
This is so depressing...

TBH I'd rather see well curated compilations of outtakes than those "everything goes" vaguely chronological collections we got with SDE. I said it before, but I believe Prince left us very good guidelines about what Vault albums could look like with C&D and TV...OF4S. Both were extremely cohesive compilations of outtakes.

Goes to show the problem of pleasing everybody. The idea of “albums” of half finished songs sounds like a terrible idea to me. I’d rather have the remastered album with extra disks of vault tracks that were recorded at the same time, clearly defined as demos. Video as a bonus. (Basically the Deluxe or SDE format!) . I think we all agreed we don’t want Crystal Ball 2 with mixed years though.

Well, curating is a job and can be well done. Of course, nothing the Estate releases is "what Prince would have done", I really think we, and they even more, need to give up on that notion. That said, Prince cared for the album format, so why not just try that? I don't want to "make my own compilations" out of random collections, I want to see records that make for good listening experiences not just for me, but anyone who still listens to albums. And I also suspect it would serve Prince's legacy better. At the end of the day it doesn't matter: you still get your outtakes, just better organized. I fully agree with this, and that's what I meant with my previous comment. Perfect example is the mishmash result of the vault discs on D&P SDE. . Something well curated doesn't even have to attempt to be a real album, but offer some cohesiveness in content and time frame. It could be done with knowledge and a bit of (good) taste.

Yeah it wouldn't mean to compete with the "real" albums, just come-up with cohesive compilations. Just on D&P for example, there was clearly an album to be made with proper band sounding D&P outtakes and another one with all that new jack swing stuff (most of it being offered to others). + the 5 Martika songs could have made for a nice EP (same with the Bonnie Raitt songs on SOTT SDE, or the Tevin Campbell songs for I'm Ready). IDK, just try and come-up with something that flows the wxay a good album does. It's not crazy to ask. Great songs are lost in the vault discs, as great as a lot of the material is. I would much prefer curated vault discs/albums with substantial thought excercised in the flow/feel of the album. I believe the Originals album does this (and while I prefer most of the individual songs on other vault discs, the carefully compiled nature of Originals makes for a better listening experience and pays greater reverence to the music). Now, what I’m really hoping for are for full vault albums compiled by Prince (even if these are drawn from written track lists). But who knows how many - if any - of these exist? Hundalasiliah!

TBH, not even mentioning the frankensteining and the inconsistencies in the choices of which version to feature, I find Originals unlisteable as an album. The sequencing doesn't flow at all. The songs belong to different eras and projects. The only thing they have in common is that they were sang by someone else. Originals is the exact opposite of what I had in mind. I would say Sex Shooter through 100 MPH flows very well. Latter half of the album not so much. It still feels more of an album to me and something that appears intentful, which does sharpen the focus of the listening experience allowing you to experience the tracks within a context (and not just playlist material). Not saying the album is without fault or even particularly successful, I’m not a fan of the Frankenstein mixes either and I’m not suggesting pull songs from different eras to compile an album (that’s just incidentally the MO of this project).
