1991 Prince demo for Céline Dion to be released Tuesday

Looks like Jon Bream let the cat out of the bag while the estate is busy being cryptic and fighting with fans on Twitter:

The Prince estate and Sony Music are releasing a previously unissued song from his vault on Tuesday, April 21, on the 10th anniversary of his passing.

“With This Tear” is Prince’s fully produced demo for Céline Dion, who recorded the tune for her 1992 self-titled album, only her second English-language effort after nine albums in French.

It is a sad, gentle ballad building to a powerhouse vocal moment — c’mon, it was written for Céline Dion — that Prince recorded in November 1991.

A piano ballad with light percussion and eventual orchestral sweep, “With This Tear” finds Prince singing in his falsetto, stretching into his upper register with wordless vocalizing.
Prince had a run of songs he wrote for other artists, many of which appear on the posthumous “Originals” collection in 2019. With songs like “Manic Monday” for the Bangles and “The Glamorous Life” for Sheila E, “Originals” features 1980s tunes except for “Love…Thy Will Be Done,” which became a 1991 single for Martika.

Dion’s version of “With This Tear” has more drama and urgency on the pre-chorus big vocal moment than in Prince’s demo.

Her song was not released as a single. But the first single from that 1992 album, “Beauty and the Beast,” a duet with Peabo Bryson, became a huge hit, winning a Grammy and an Oscar.
According to celinedion.com, Prince heard “Beauty and the Beast” on the radio and was inspired to write a song for Dion. “With This Tear” became the last song recorded for her album, displacing “Calling You” from the film “Bagdad Café,” originally recorded by Minneapolis’ own Jevetta Steele.

I think the funniest part is if this didn't publicly leak last year they wouldn't have picked another song, I think they just wouldn't have released anything.

I think they're 100% trying to cash in on the hype around Celine Dion's comeback and hoping this will pull in views from her fanbase rolleyes

Smh... why this release? confused

I like the demo but the Piano & Microphone tour had so many gems which would've fit this 10-year milestone much better.

The 10-year anniversary of Prince's death and the estate releases... a Celine Dion demo.

I'm starting to think that it's not only incompetence, but also complete indifference to the man and his work.

It’s a great track, and certainly worthy of release. It was definitely a favorite of mine from the Diamonds and Love bootleg. However, it should be released as part of a much larger project, which showcases the best of his unreleased material from that period, as Prince suggested in one of his final interviews.

https://www.rollingstone....ne-227347/

Trickling out a song here and there is quite lazy, especially considering the wealth of material, and is not a satisfying experience for the fan. And it’s not what Prince had in mind for his own vault, if this interview is anything to go by.

Maybe they’ll surprise us and announce a much larger release of some sort, which With This Tear is apart of.

Let's say that's better than nothing.
I'm not complaining but 4 example the other take of "Sometimes It Snows In April" would have been perfect (recorded the same day in 85', in line with the "Parade" celebration).

I don't like this song at all so this news means nothing to me personally but I'm glad to see that the estate are at least releasing something. It's not at all what I wanted but I said before on another thread that literally any release is better than no release.

Bootleggers 'released' the song. The estate are sanctioning its release to celebrate the anniversary of Prince's death. Pathetic.

I agree, it's better than nothing. I just wish they could speed up the releases. I don't want to wait another 5-6 months for the next single.

Interesting. It says ℗ 2026 NPG Records, Inc., under exclusive license to Legacy Recordings. Normally, it would be Warner for the rest of the world outside the US, but that’s not the case this time.

The track is already live on youtube and being circulated by fans, people are commenting on the video and discussing it online, but the estate hasn't even acknowledged it yet. They're too busy jerking themselves off and arguing with fans on twitter to even hype up or promote this single before it drops tomorrow.

I still can't comprehend how anybody could suck this fucking bad at their jobs lol

There is also a "official video" with a small piece of an interview at the beginning and crowd sounds at the end. Different clips extract from classical Prince videos.
