As to whether publishing music on YT or anywhere else that passes as an artist's and use their name does constitutes any kind of legal infringement, IDK what the state of the legislation is, but I think it should be forbidden. If it isn't, we will probably end-up with so much AI slop that imitates artists' that the original works will only be a tiny fraction of what one finds when looking for their stuff...

That's not really how it works. It takes a LOT of data to train an AI model. It's not as simple as giving it something to "copy" then having it create something new from one example - complete with that 90's Prince bootleg sound - as in; ripped from a cassette tape made in the 80s.

Something like Suno (I've used it to make "birthday songs" for friends, since you can feed it a list of their interests have it generate something in their favorite genre and it sound like you've actually made an effort - more than writing a 3 line prompt while sitting on the toilet) has been fed everything on Spotify and can imitate styles and genres. It can do a convincing human voice and can very accurately create instrumentation. If you tell it to "Make it sound like a very old cassette dub" it simply ignores you (Literally just tried it). Spotify is all digital. It doesn't have those data-points.

There are other AI music generators. Those that don't have the same "safeguards"... where they will let you imitate a celebrity voice, where sexual lyrics are allowed etc... I'm not aware of any that are capable of adding that kind of artifacts... more than perhaps the crackle of a vinyl record.

I can believe AI was used for the voice/background vocals - how else? (although IMO the background vocals are the most convincing part of the whole exercise). I don't believe this was 100% AI generated from a written prompt. The fact the YouTube page only has one song rather than a slew of "new" songs also suggests human involvement IMO.

If I'm wrong then it's worrying since the fakes are going to be considerably more difficult to spot.

What I find real troubling is the comments' section: many, many people assume it's real (there's even talk of Michael B dropping that title in a recent interview, though Princevault dooesn't reflect that). I couldn't tell whether it's AI or not at this stage, I just take it for granted that any new Prince song that pops up outta nowhere has to be AI unless it's previously been documented or we know the source to be reliable. What preoccupies me is the fact that fakes can, and will pass as the real thing. More and more often as the quality improves. Over and over. This may be the biggest threat to Prince's (and any artist's) legacy: his work becoming a drop in the middle of an ocean of fakes.

Yeah. I take a similar stance. Assume it's fake until confirmed otherwise.

I don't even think AI music is completely without merit. Every so often I remember The Eternal Jukebox exists and throw a song in there if I'm particularly feeling it. Rather than skipping back or hitting repeat... foreverjukebox.com throw a song in there and it'll use AI to create a neverending mix (Loose! works particularly well since it seems designed with dance/EDM in mind - I'd imagine ballads would sound horrific).

But fakes will be an issue in the Prince bootleg community. Given they're at their worst now and will only get better.
