The little animation thing is bizarre but am I right in saying that there is some sort of legal issue surrounding the actual video of Purple Rain? It's on YouTube but was never uploaded by the official Prince account and was instead uploaded by some random guy. So yeah, it's kind of weird to do the little animation thing but they want to capitalize on the song appearing in Stranger Things just like how Kate Bush did when one of her songs appeared on that show.

I actually think it's a rare smart move from the Prince estate to license his music to shows like Stranger Things. That's a massively popular show amongst younger people who probably don't even know who Prince is so it opens up his music to a new audience. And having the song appear as a fresh upload on YouTube makes it more accessible for people who just watched the show and heard the song in it and want to listen to it again.

I think you’re right about licensing Prince’s music but I wish it wasn’t always the same 2 or 3 tracks. How about some unreleased stuff that they could then release. I thought the other day that ‘Others Here With Us’, ‘Dance with the Devil’ and of course ‘Wednesday’ could be easily worked into the next series of that ‘Wednesday’ show.
There may or may not be something coming!

Looks like the animation is of side 2 playing of the one step release, given the 2025 date on the label spinning round (unless there was another 2025 re-issue of the album?).

"Purple Rain" and "When Doves Cry" was played on an episode of Stranger Things last night. I'm wondering if the estate reposted "Purple Rain" to their channel because they were expecting a surge of people looking to stream it after the show ended.

Purple Rain and When Doves Cry are among his most well known and popular songs so I suppose it makes sense to focus on those when trying to hook new fans. Sure, I'd prefer to hear something I've never heard before but for the target audience of Stranger Things and Wednesday, Purple Rain and When Doves Cry ARE new songs they've never heard before. And they are a lot more accessible than something from the vault. So I can understand why they focus on those even though I agree with you that I'd personally prefer it to be something from the vault.

Is that the visualiser for Purple Rain? I saw a post about it but can't find the actual visualiser. I guess it's blocked for people in UK.

It ties into the Stranger Things finale, they use side B of the album as a plot device so the animation / visualiser reflects that.

I guess the Estate only cooperates with Netflix if it's Purple Rain related and not a 9-hour documentary by an Oscar winning director. deal

I don't know if you're being sincere or sarcastic. But high quality releases of previously unreleased music and/or concerts would be great, instead of rehashing the same album (Purple Rain). But if they insist on Purple Rain, how about a high quality release of the August 1983 First Avenue show instead of a bunch of Purple Rain merch and re-releases no one wants.

the animated video isn't even the real vinyl which has 4 songs on the side 2,

and not six as in the animated video.

why am i actually mentioning this...

who cares.

That.

And, even more nagging... wink

thelast song Purple Rain, takes a big part of the vinyl space. Clearly not here.

While you may try to shop stuff around, you usually licence... what people want to buy, not the other way around. What's in ST is what the ST people wanted.
