Prince music in Stranger Things final

Spoiler Alert!

TLDR : 2 Prince tracks play back to back in show.

When Doves Cry
It plays over a Triumphant part of the show
I won't lie I literally busted up laughing when I heard it šŸ˜‚
I feel like it didn't really fit the mood or moment.
They butcherd it with a weak edit of the song.

Then Purple Rain plays over an emotional screen.
Again, I laughed and rolled my eye While my girlfriend was trying to hide her tears.
I told her, if Prince was alive he'd be pissed šŸ˜‚
The editing of the track was a bit better than WDC

For a minute I thought maybe they would end it with Baby I'm A Star

Now I'm not hating or against his music being played. Its a cool, and possibly introduction to his music to a new audience

Anywho what was your thoughts
Cant believe my purple psychedelic pimp slap pimp2

And I descend from grace, In arms of undertow
I will take my place, In the great below

Would Prince be against it? Yeah probably

But who cares

And i think they used it perfectly. Both tracks.

I’m happy his music is being used in a huge show that will give him more exposure to a younger audience.

Prince would be sick to see PR being used in such a trash.

Seems like I have to remind TTC what Prince wrote in 'One Song':
.
"Very few of mankind's creations are designed to make you feel good

Unless you get pleasure from seeing the human body

Desecrated by guns, explosions, fights

And any other things these so-called "artists" create

In the name of freedom, many have used art as a means to destroy the human mind

As an excuse to continue we hear "Art reflects society"

How many times has this lie been repeated: "creations are not real"

They say and yet any one of these people can call to mind

Images and complete scenes of horror in graphic detail

They will carry these so-called "unreal" creations around with them for the rest of their lives

These images are now a part of their being

In the name of recreation these people in fact are recreating themselves in their own images

Society then reflects art"

.

Let alone the fact that they butchered the song too. Editing something is ok, of course, as long as it's done with respect to the music, but this was butchering, not editing.

Friends don't let friends clap on 1 and 3.

It was so well done, too. And even how they used the record to set off a time to destroy the upside down was clever.

The editing of "Purple Rain" and the lyrics they used were well utilized. It actually made me emotional because it just fit what was going on.

We don't know if Prince would've let the team use the songs or not. Not like his music hasn't been in TV shows or movies before. (black-ish, Pretty Woman anyone?)

I'm not surprised Prince fans scoffed at it instead of celebrating it. It tracks. Kate Bush, Journey, and Tiffany got huge download and streaming numbers after their songs were featured in the show. Why Prince fans wouldn't be happy to have his music hit a new (and arguably younger) demographic is beyond me.

I like the show, and thought they used the songs and album well. There's been loads of great 80s music featured throughout the 5 seasons so it made sense to include Prince's work also, alongside all the Kate Bush and David Bowie and whatever else.

Woo. Hoo. So glad prince might now experience a 10 day spike in streaming numbers.

Meanwhile, you can't throw a nickel across the room without hitting any number of prince's contemporaries or other legacy acts releasing package after package of archival material.

Maybe we'll get lucky and get a prince themed taco bell commercial next. I'm sure mountain dew can come up with some purple bullshit.

I thought it was so cleverly done - to actually use the track sequence of side 2 of Purple Rain as both the soundtrack and the actual device to conclude one of the biggest shows on the planet in the last decade can only possibly be a great thing for Prince's legacy.

That's just churlish. This is incredibly good exposure. It's not just Prince music being used in the finale of one of the biggest shows in the world. It's not just 2 songs of his being played back-to-back in the finale of one of the biggest shows in the world. It's the actual record being a crucial plot device, being played on screen, associating his music, picked by the characters, as the crescendo to defeating evil. Outside of a song being repeated over and over again as the saviour for one of the characters (i.e. Kate Bush) I can't think of a better way his music could be used to expose it to so many people, and so many young people.

Seeing a spike in interest in Prince already across the social media platform. This is a great thing in my opinion. If it turns some younger ones onto him, that would be brilliant. I’m sure it will!

Prince's position in the annals of pop music is already secure. I couldn't care less how or when young people are exposed to his music, or even if they are. Personally, I find the whole 'playing for clicks' vibe of licensing art for exposure rather distasteful. Ultimately, it's only about lining pockets (and maybe a viral tik tok or two). Prince ain't got pockets, so big whoop; curious though, I am, to see what a spike in income might finance through the estate. I suspect very little. I'd also be curious about the near/long term ramifications of Kate bush's inclusion on hit TV show 'stranger things'' soundtrack. Again, I suspect very little. Anyhow...good for 'stranger things', good for Netflix, good for young people, good for the estate. And good pull with churlish. I just want what I want. Everything else is a distraction.

I may have missed this, but apparently there was a Prince poster in a shot as well.

The cool thing about this, and the music, is the Duffer brothers love of all things 80s. The easter eggs in the first season alone were immense and so fun to try and spot. Their song choices throughout all five seasons were spot on, too. The fact that Prince was in the mix, and in such a significant want to the story, in that final episode was just perfect.

Such a bad attitude, I’m a big fan of Prince, since 89, my favourite music artist by some distance. Of course Prince will probably always have a circle of fans that exist. However it’s definitely getting smaller and smaller. This will give The Prince legacy a boost. And what a wonderful thing if it gets a portion of younger people into listening to Prince . Some will stick at it, some won’t. That’s life! It’s still overall a great thing.

More exposure = more fans

More fans = more demand

More demand = more releases

More releases = happy Hannah

So yeah, you can look for the negative here if you like but the possible benefits here more than outweigh any perceived negatives. Even if 90% of the people introduced to Prince through Stranger Things drop off after a few weeks that still leaves 10% who may stick with it and grow the fan base. Which is a good thing.
