I turned 57 this year.

I'd say we mainly skew gen X, with a few boomers and youngsters in the mix.

I'm 34. Kind of an awkward age. My son thinks I'm ancient and my mum thinks I'm a baby lol

I'm 31, been a fan since I was 10 years old. His resurgence in '04 is what made my mom show me Purple Rain and it was a wrap.

63. I bought the 45 r.p.m. single of 1999, with the B-side How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore when I was 20 or so. And the instant Purple Rain came out, I'd blast it through the PA system at Jardin Nelson, a restaurant in Old Montreal where I worked as a waiter that summer. The guitar extravaganza that ends Let's Go Crazy did give the tourists pause as they tucked into their crepes.

I bought Little red Corvette, the single, and went from there to 1999 in 1982 smile

59 here. I was 16 when I discovered Prince through local radio.

My musical youth ;

I do remember hearing Controversy in 1981 on Dutch radio, but wasn't aware it was him. Kinda liked the groove. Radio Veronica was a pirate radio we were addicted too.

Disco was hated back in the day, and you could not be open about it.

We were all New Wavers, with black painted, piled up hair, hairsprayed like hell, grandpa's overcoat, ripped t-shirts with safety pins, scottich pants with too much zippers. The girls were crazy about me. I was the coolest thing and often suspended from school. But I liked boys. wink

We all were into The Cure, Ultravox, Visage, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Echo & The Bunnymen, PIL, Depeche Mode, Heaven 17, Anne Clark, etc...

We danced like beetles, kicking and turning with our bowed backs like whitches, looking to the floor. Dead serious. Humour was banned! I smoked my first joint, and threw up after it. smile

Two years earlier, I was 14.

It was all Iron Maiden, Kayak, Saxon, Bodine, AC/DC, Herman Brood, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd....

And ever since Prince, I discovered the wonderful gigantic world of black American music. Up until today. Can't get enough of it, and still dicover great music from the seventies, eighties.

I wish we had cameras back in the day to see back all those serious young attitutdes. wink

We danced 'The Jerk', and Disco, in big disco's with round dancefloors, lit up, and turning around. Damn! Bought silver shiny pants, white sneakers, and diagonal red and white bat-sleeves t-shirts. Had my hair done in curls for gods sake.

Maastricht just over the border in Holland, had the goldmines of clothing shops, and record shops for our tastes. Sometimes you had to wait three weeks to get an import album.

And that was just no problem. On the way back home, we smelled the brand new record covers, a smell i never ever forget. biggrin

Prince became my university soundtrack from late 1984 till 1990. And brought the whole puprle stable with it, including the Minneapolis sound. But lost him in the 90's and later on. From D&P on, it was a let down for me. I moved on in music. Jazz and classic, The Beatles, older music even, it was all on my new discovery list. Saw Miles Davis in in summer of 1991. Goosebumps. Prince from then on was just a(nother) pop star. But was happy Miles liked him.

Best musical childhood ever. smile

What's your story?

Since our ages are open, let's go back.
