The most underrated Prince single of all time is.... Watch this performance - his last ever on Top of the Pops, and tell me the guy wasn't just oozing utter coolness from every pour:

Arms of Orion fits into this category too. Hated it when released but has seriously grown on me in the last few years. There may or may not be something coming!

^^that performance is lip-synced wretchedness...everybody knows that 'pink cashmere' is the most underrated single of all time, anyhow... [Edited 10/3/25 21:15pm]

I would actually rate “U make my sun shine” in this category

[Edited 10/3/25 17:59pm] The Jason Nevins remix got so much radio play here in Liverpool and even heard it in the clubs a bit, I thought it was going to be a hit.

It got a tonne of airplay at the time. Many people don't realise the CD single had too many tracks and went against chart rules in the UK. The chart position it did reach over here was solely based on import sales alone.

One Song.
Not THE best, but the most underrated. Friends don't let friends clap on 1 and 3.

"Black Sweat" | |

His most underrated single ever was "Pop Life". . It reached the top 10 in lots of markets (#7 here in the US), yet despite being a decent hit, it was left off of "The Hits".

Never liked it all that much. For me, it's the slow verses, insidiously boring and with too many key changes, sluggish, it sounds incomplete. I find it a frustrating song although the chorus is quite well done. - Prince looked stunning that year! uneblievably sexy and handsome. Great hairdo too. "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts." (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)

I am definitely in the Pink Cashmere camp. I believe it is the most underrated because it is so often unmentioned, yet is an absolute gem. (Is there ANY song that sounds like it? I think it is in a class all by itself.)

Also, not a fan of The Greatest Romance Ever Sold, studio or live, though it seems to me that Prince was pretty proud of it.

His alternate version of the album isn't really all that different though.

But I'm also a big fan of Greatest Romance. Prince was on another level in the 90s when it comes to ballads. Shhh (my favourite), Insatiable, Eye Hate U, etc. Man was on fire.

Add Man O War, Friend Lover Sister Mother/Wife, I Love U But I Don't Trust U Anymore, Damn U, Sweet Baby to that list. Just exquisite balladry. I recall having a debate on an MJ board with someone who claimed they were a Prince fan, who said that Prince was terrible at writing ballads. I couldn't believe it, as to me, he was one of the finest balladeers of all time. [Edited 10/7/25 10:38am]

I'd go as far as to say that I think he was probably the best at it. But I just can't take his ballads seriously at all. It's just not convincing. They don't do anything for me. The Lady In My Life and Break Of Dawn are two exceptions. Amazing songs. But for the most part, as good as MJ was at some things, he couldn't hold a candle to Prince when it came to romantic and/or sexual ballads. Then again, I don't think anybody else could either.

I wouldn't have thought of it, but I must agree. Pink Cashmere is THE shit. It was one of my fave Prince songs of all times as a teenager. It was kind of a throwaway single, though. Peach was promoted, but I never, ever saw the Pink Cashmere MV play on French TV at the time (I actually only learned there was one years later). That fucking hi-hat hypnotized me from jump. The rest is headphone bliss. Just prince having a night in the studio...

Make sure you stick that on your 200 disc CD changer You see? There's the rub. One of my favorite songs of all time, but it's only available on a hits compilation that I don't want in my changer... Maybe one day I'll splurge and buy the CD single and my 200 disc changer shuffle mode vibe can be nearer perfection.

You could add the Girl 6 soundtrack to your 2000 disc CD changer instead. I know it's still a compilation album, but at least then, you're also adding 'She Spoke 2 Me', 'Girl 6' & 'Don't Talk 2 Strangers' to the mix too. blah blah blah

It was not left off, it's the second track of the first disc of The Hits.

What was sad about that one is that it was one of Prince's most personal statements at the time, but the point he was trying to make went unnoticed for lack of promotion. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/
