We have plenty of books and articles about 1983-1989 but there are still plenty of songs from this era we haven't heard or only in mediocre quality, and basically half of the Purple Rain album is still a mystery (surely there must be early demo/studio recordings for all those songs that were first recorded on 3 August 1983). . Hopefully next year's Parade SDE will fill in some gaps, but considering the current estate is seemingly incapable of releasing something in proper quality with proper documentation... . And then there's the fertile 1993-1995 era: will we ever get our hands on all those previously unreleased studio recordings and live recordings? All they've done for the 30th anniversary of TGE is show parts of some concert videos to people who've paid stupid money to visit Paisley Park. Yep, hands down the most obscure era in terms of a substancial lack of circulating unreleased material is the Dirty Mind era. I don’t think I’ve even heard of any uncirculating DM outtakes being out there in the hands of a select few. We only know of a few song titles but that’s it! Given that some refer to DM as the first “true” Prince album and that we’re nearing its 50th anniversary, it’s baffling to me how there’s been almost close to nothing from that era other than Lisa, Rough, the Sister demos, and 3 live shows (2 of them in video). I have to admit: early 80s Prince is my favorite. Those are the years that I love the most.Dirty Mind and Controversy deserve to be celebrated! Each album deserves a SDE.I’m tired of seeing that era being ignored.

I like how he recycled the drum track from When 2 R In Love to build the Dream demo upon.

This sounds great. It adds a lot of extra interest and prestige to what – for me – is one of the artist's less exciting albums. [Edited 10/25/25 1:52am]

"Rave Church Style" is best. Thou that "rock rock, rock the house!" vocal sample is annoying.

Face to Face is really growing on me. I love his vocal.

Is The Ryde Divine the same as what was previously released? Shame it's not a Prince lead vocal version, great song.

I have been listening to this set a lot. I bloody love it. Barring the live show from The diamonds deluxe set. I much prefer these songs.I think because I have never really listened properly to the Tevin Campbell songs. So those have been an eye opener to me. I think this set has a great mix of different styles. And is highly entertaining.

That pre-1983 should have/should be documented and explored. Partly because the people there at that time aren’t getting any younger, plus it’s essentially pre-fame. Duane Tudahl would be the first person in my mind to collate details for that period but seems to have chosen the post SOTT/1987+ era for his next project. Ever thought of writing a book about the era, Bizzie? There may or may not be something coming!

lustmealways said: this is very, very likely the only new prince material anyone will be getting for at least another year, probably more, so folks should enjoy and savor. I’m half way through my second listen and am really enjoying it. I agree with others that the sound quality isn’t like an official release but I’m used to the 80s bootlegs (Royal Jewels, remember that), so aren’t too fussed. The new jack swing middle stuff ain’t my bag but there are some quality tunes. With This Tear, Baby Doll, I like the ravey type tunes and the rehearsals. Glad to have these and would be happy to buy if properly released. There may or may not be something coming!

. AFAIK documentation on this era is scant. This is before he went to Sunset Sound (where there are work orders). This is when (presumably) did a lot of his own. . So you'd need access to whatever is available in the vault, e.g. notes on tapes etc. Which the estate is keeping secret. In the past we've seen that band members etc. can bring up memories when confronted with names and dates and audio, so you'd need that to reconstruct an era where there is a lot of solo work by Prince where there were few people around. . Hell, so far all we've heard about this era from the estate is a couple of random tracks and a guide saying there is an album where the tapes are partially destroyed due to age or bad conservation. IMHO the estate needs to allow people to go through whatever is in the archives from the pre-1983 era, and allow these people drag in band members and listen to recordings from that era and ask them about them. . But considering that hasn't even happened with Purple Rain...

I had never noticed that Uncle Sam uses the horn line from Dopamine Rush off Times Squared. Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife. More info at https://www.facebook.com/TMATSPodcast/

Just a thought. Just throwing this out there… but, do we know for a fact that this was the definitive track list? Could this be just a rough selection of tracks, for consideration for the project? Some choices seem a bit odd.

. Afaik the tracklist was shared after the Diamonds & Pearls SDE (or, I never see the complete list of Diamonds & Love outtakes). The list shared contains also unreleased songs from the Diamonds & Pearls period that have been replaced by the current Estate with other songs (for example I Hear Ur Voice replaced by Darkside) and other songs from O)+> era. I really don't know if Diamonds & Love was ever pressed, or it remains a project until the split in two different project, so I don't know if the Diamonds & Pearls outtakes had a remaster process before the final release. And afaik, we found photos of Love Symbol DE pressed in vynil, but I never see a photo of the Love Symbol SDE. I don't know if it exists or what unreleased songs from Diamonds & Love project have been chosen to be there. So, the hypotesis that those outtakes leaked were a part of the raw selection for the Diamonds & Love project could make sense. . But maybe someone here have a deeper knowledge of the Diamonds & Love history.

Only got through half but tbh, a lot of this is quite awful lol. Just way, way, WAY too much tony m. And too many tracks that just stink of the parts of early 90s music I don't care for anymore. Cool to hear slightly diff versions of love 2tha 9s and three chains but I wouldn't buy this if it was for sale. I just don't get why they pursued a vault release for this era when there were more gems ten years earlier? Argh. So in one sense the estate was right maybe to hold off on this. OTOH, if you love this npg era you'd prob eat up outtakes from both these albums together so they missed an opportunity there. [Edited 10/26/25 22:01pm]

goodbye and baby doll were leaked in lossless .. the mp3s are a rough listen ... would be cool if the full lossless set made it out .. especially if the estate is never going to release any of these tracks
