Skips

We all have our skip songs on a Prince album.

Excluding "The Arms of Orion" or "I Love U In Me," what are you top few skip songs for whatever reason. (Give a reason if you wish.) In no particular order.

Here are mine (up to Emancipation for me):

Shy (The Gold Experience)

Arrogance ( prince )

Jughead (Diamonds and Pearls)

Slave (Emancipation)

New World (Emancipation)

Graffiti Bridge (Graffiti Bridge)

When We're Dancing Close and Slow (Prince)

Every day when I awake, the greatest of joys is mine: that of being ME.

99% of the times, I listen to whole albums —Prince or otherwise—, no skips for me.

It's often allowed songs to grow on me. And TBH songs don't make me "cringe" (to use a verb I've often read online). Even if I'm not particularly into a song, I'm not 17 anymore: I can listen to it without getting upset.

That said, I've almost always worked from home while listening to music and I don't have children: my listening time is pretty much all day long, so I don't need to get picky.

Loads of them. Most of the "hits". Songs like Purple Rain, Kiss, Raspberry Beret, etc. I'm not saying they're bad songs. I've just heard them so much that I'm kind of sick of them. In fact, I had heard them so much that I was sick of them before I was even a fan.

Other than that though, songs I skip because I just don't like them are all the ones you listed, every rap song, the first half of Hit'nRun Phase One, every instrumental and every song with Rosie Gaines and/or Shelby J bellowing into the microphone.

The only song I'd skip if I'm not alone is "Orgasm". And probably a couple of others if my 7-year-old son is around (like "Lovesexy", "Lady Cab Driver", etc.). I'm lucky to be a non-native English speaker, so I'll gladly play "Sister" while he's there, though. lol

If I'm alone or wearing earbuds, I don't skip anything.

Shy (The Gold Experience)

Arrogance ( prince )

Jughead (Diamonds and Pearls)

Slave (Emancipation)

New World (Emancipation)

Graffiti Bridge (Graffiti Bridge)

When We're Dancing Close and Slow (Prince)

All of these I really love a lot, except for Arrogance and Shy.

-

My list : People seriously gonna kill me for this. wink

-

Wedding Feast (all of it, who doesn't? wink)

Pussy Control (annoying disco drum synth, and boring chorus)

Guitar (too less, too boring, too flat, too easy)

Peach (same, too less, too boring, too flat, too easy)

Fury (same same, too easy and throwaway)

Black Sweat (that horrible sqeaking synth)

2 Y. 2 D. (could've been so much more, a sort of overproduced really funky tune, instead of a pop song,)

Emancipation (powerless, too-light, with weak chorus and annoying lyrics)

The Work (never liked the pace of it, lame unfunky drums, lyrics hurt my ears)

Prettyman (idem dito, too easy, should've been done by Morris)

Rainbow Children (lyrics obviously, song could've been stronger, less voice effects)

The Most Beautiful Girl In The World (...skip! too much sugar to my taste)

Sexy MF (because of the lame irritating rap the song is ruined for me, love the horns though)

We March (... something about it is boring as fuck. next!)

Black Muse (could've been a sort of 'Strange Relationship' tune, if production was stronger and more 'fun')

Diamonds & Pearls (can't stand it, too much Rosie for me)

Big City (oh god, the lyrics... boring as fuck, tune and all)

Million $ Show,

+ Shut This Down

+ Ain't About To Stop

+ Like A Mack

+ Fallinlove2nite

+ X"s Face

+ Hardrocklover (Seriously? Hit'nRun fast as you can! All of it is the worse Prince ever did. Even worse than Kamasutra. The ultimate lower than low Josh woosh-woosh failure production. Why, Prince? Why? Did you ran out of ideas? Was Jehova telling you to do this horror? I wonder who listens to this album anyway?)

Gold (never liked it, even after listening to it again recently, the lyrics? uh)

3 Chains O Gold (super meh over the top boring)

Funknroll (really?)

Extralovable (Hit'nrun Phase Two version. Completely misses the great funk of the original. Why did you fuck this up Prince?)

Everybody Loves Me

The Max

Future Baby Mama

Feel Better Feel Good Feel Wonderful (hell no!)

77 Beverly Park (elevator music. would've been a much better piano-ballad fitting UTCM era)

Get On The Boat (... Prince repeating himself over and over)

Insense and candles (horrible production)

Walk In Sand

Beautiful Loved and Blessed (same boring production)

Blue Light (... skip skip skip fast!)

The Flow

Get Yo Groove On

We Get's Up

Courtin' Time

Mr. Happy

The Jam Of The Year (lyrics... uh!)

-

(...) I could go on (...)

-

As you can see, both 'Hit'nRun Phase 1 and Two' are not up to my likes at all. The both lack all the “fun” in the world, and the feeling of “happiness” is nowhere to be found. (Compare it to any other album from before 1990). It's as if those albums were made with extreme precision (dry) and without any ‘joy’ (chickengrease, squirrelmeat, know what I mean?). There is also too much involvement from others that don't bring any value to the music. The quality of the songwriting on both albums is so seriously low, and lyrically it's as if Prince hasn't seen the outside world for a decade or more. There isn't a single song that melodically stands out, or, that has a daring musical approach, or, an interesting production level. Bash me if you like.

Let's stop here. You're saying you really love "Graffiti Brige" (the song) a lot? And "Jughead"?

I mean: I don't skip them. And I actually quite enjoy "Jughead". But loving them a lot? wink

Except for HnR 1 and 2, I can relate to about 80–90% of your list, in the sense that they're also songs that I enjoy less.

Yep.

I have to say the song 'Graffiti Bridge is something I don't skip.

I know it sounds super 'meh'.

Let's call it a guilty pleasure, is that acceptable? wink

And as a music lover, i have to say it is a really bad song, yes. wink

But I don't skip it (yet). Maybe because there's some feeling of 'joy' in the end chorus that I like?

I have to think... wink

-

Jughead is a song i never skip. It is a good song? Hell no.

But has its funky moments. And it's the only moment I like Rosie (for some unclear reason).

Jughead could've been so much more. The basics are there. I can hear more potential in that one.

It's also the one time i can stand Prince's silly rappin' too.

It's all just a feeling you know, why we like something and why not.

-

-

Oh, and I have to add 'Cream' to my list as well.

And finally PlectrumElectrum, I've only ever listened to it fully one time and I disliked most of it. It's Prince's cringey lyrics mainly.

I'll just pick a few albums for now and list the songs I skip.

For you : For you, So blue

Prince : With you, Bambi

Dirty mind : Sister

1999 : Something in the water (I prefer the live versions), Free, Delirious

Purple Rain : Darling Nikki.

From 1991 onwards I skip pretty much everything.

D&P has more misses than hits for me and post D&P is where my appreciation for Prince ends. Similar to Stevie Wonder when he entered the 80s - he lost it too.

Personally, I've revisited emancipation a couple of times but all it does is remind me how prince had lost it. His musical output from the 90s onwards does absolutely nothing for me. I've heard them all but the magic is gone from that music.
