#Shhh30, a *VIRTUAL* symposium celebrating the 30th anniversary of Prince’s The Gold Experience and The NPG’s Exodus

https://shhh.polishedsolid.com/

.

Did anyone watch the videos? Were there interesting stories? New information?

.

(The videos are still available for the next month, I think.)

Thank you for bringing this up. I always wonder why De Angela's symposia don't get posted on here enough. Incredible, incredible scholarship on Prince and wonderful guests every year. Some serious deep dives. I was unable to watch live especially Morrris Hayes and Michael Van Huffel, but will catch videos while at work

Videos available on Zoom til end of the month - but the two keynotes (Morris and MVH) on YouTube already. De Angela will edit the videos and post all on YouTube as time permits (aiming for next month).

Dr. Duff (De Angela) edits and posts everything publicly in order to keep Prince's legacy alive, so PLEASE support her by liking the videos at the very least! She doesn't charge registration fees for these symposia, which is very unusual in academia! She claws together sponsorship to cover the costs - also tough in academic in the US right now!

Previous videos are up on her YouTube channel @polishedsolid

... as are the weekly slow-read sessions of Duane Tudhal's books under "What did Prince Do this Week?"

The Morris Hayes interview is excellent. He's a great, funny story-teller.

Cool to hear about him coming through with Mazarati and Carmen before getting into NPG.

Getting asked to go to P's hotel suite to watch the 3 Chains O' Gold film. Playing Solo live for one and only time (Bataclan 94).

.

I'm only halfway through the MVH interview but so far interesting to hear about a poster he did for TMBGIW, artwork for Purple Medley, TGE and Exodus (which took about 20 hours).

... and that there a so much more skits recorded during the making of the Exodus album...

Nice!

Morris hayes telling about the 4-5 songs prince played for him - that are supposedly better than anything on Purple Rain and which Prince saved for his children - has been told before, but is still entertaining. biggrin I was thinking that prince's idea of what is better than Purple Rain is not necessarily the same as his fans', though. lol And prince saying he wasn't gonna give Warners his best songs, yeah, that was about the Come and Gold era songs, I'm sure. Back when Purple Rain was made, I'm sure Prince gave Warners his best so he could become a big star and earn millions. wink But no one said the 4-5 songs were from the Purple Rain era. It could've been newer material, like The Divine. wink It's too bad Morris Hayes doesn't remember what songs it was, so I guess we'll never know. neutral

The Michael van Huffel interview was fine. biggrin I'm not really surprised by prince's level of involvement in the covermaking process. You'd think if your boss was sitting next to you and answering your phone while you worked, it'd be annoying, but when it's prince... That must've been fun. biggrin I'm just wondering how he found the time to hang. I mean, he also had a clothes designer to keep an eye on, songs to record, shows to perform, girlfriends to please... lol But he DID make it to Miami. I have the bootleg. wink The "put the city drawing on a photo of Mayte's butt" story was fun, but you know, I looked and I looked and I looked at that spread and I couldn't tell what was up or down or sideways in that butt photo. lol
