Who were his biggest influences as a balladeer?

So, he was obviously listening to a fair bit of Babyface around the Emancipation era, but who else would you say influenced his ballad writing?

Joni Mitchell is an obvious mention, he dedicated an album to her and all, and some of his more interesting stream of consciousness style lyrics and melodic risks seem influenced by her.
