If I'm not mistaken this track was released before Prince.

It's pretty well known at this point that Prince requested Josh to create a track that has the same feel as Aaliyah's "Rock The Boat" for his re-recording of "1,000 Hugs & Kisses" (I refuse to use the new title because it's ridiculous).
Emeli 's album came out in 2012, and Prince (or, rather, the ladies of the NPG) were also covering her song "Next To Me" during live shows, so it's very possible he was inspired by "Mountains" to create "Way Back Home".

Don't hear the similarity myself, but I know her song 'Mountains' very well.

If you haven't heard it, I'd highly recommend the album it is on. 'Our Version of Events' is one of the best albums in the last 20 years.

The strings are very similar.

Typical Prince to take something, change it, and make something new.

The 2 songs are different overall, but there's parts that he definitely stole.

I was under the impression that a lot of the music on AOA was created by Josh.

Correct. Joshua stated that he would work on tracks and Prince would write to them or record vocals to songs already written and tailored to the track, such as in "1,000 Hugs". That's how Josh got co-writer and co-producer credit. Same in HNR1, which was really made up of outtakes and stuff recorded after AOA's release.

He done a podcast/interview a few years ago (after P passed). May have been Funkenberry or Michael Dean.

He was asked about Way Back Home, if it contained a heartbeat sound effect but he said no. Sounded like the track (musically) was all him.

He made out that was the case on a bit of AOA and even moreso with HNR Phase 1.

I recall he also said P asked him to make a track with dramatic roller-coaster vibe for HardRockLover. And as mentioned earlier P asked for a Rock The Boat style track for A 1000 Hugs And Kisses
