Then you clearly know nothing about recording or mixing music. An Atmos mix from the original multi-track tapes is NOTHING like "a colorized re-release".
What they DO provide, for the hardcore fan, is the ability to hear the music in a more intimate fashion. Want to imagine what it was like being in studio when Prince was mixing the album? Or on stage with the band? Then a 5.1 or Atmos mix is the way to go.
[Edited 7/13/25 4:28am] I know enough to know that when I imagine prince in the studio making records, he's always seated (maybe sometimes standing) between 2 speakers and that he didn't approve the final mix in the hope that some Atmos guy would come along at some point in history to finally reveal the further glory of his music. The fact is, it just doesn't intrigue me in the slightest. Enjoy your upgrade, though.

Most people couldn't care less if they hear music in mono rather than stereo either. I get it. That's fine. But those of us who enjoy the format are very much looking forward these mixes.
But using "Prince didn't want it heard that way" is a bit of an odd argument to make in a forum that is spending so much time clamoring for vault tracks that, for the most part, exist in non-final mixes (we all know Prince would likely have tweaked most of them again before final release) and in many cases, he didn't want people hearing the songs AT ALL.

I'm not most people. I've been listening to the song for 40 years. I still listen to the record I bought in 1989 at the same record store that I still shop at. I listen to it on the sound system that I've developed over the past 25 years. Nobody's saying 'prince didn't want it that way'. I'm saying I hear it the way prince wanted me to hear it. There's a difference. Atmos is going to reveal nothing to me. If you ever invite me over to listen to your Atmos mix, I'd probably come over and think it was neat. Then I'd go home and continue to be satisfied with what I've got. As far as outtakes, gimme all you got. And live stuff. They're the only things that are going to motivate me to open my wallet. Atmos-ing what I've already got is for the Jones's. Enjoy it, if that's your bag.
