I imagine a life of sanctimonious admonishment and settling for anything is more fulfilling, huh? No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

Don't you have three copies of the video version as well?? A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Exactly what I was thinking! I have my original 12" that I bought in 85, then I burned it to a CD inthe 90s, then edited it a bit a few years after (it DOES get repetitive). I want an official copy of the video version! That thing is fire!

Dolby Atmos remix, not a remaster.
Just for clarification

Not 100% certain if anyone was absolutely sure, but the consensus when its existence was revealed (at least to most of us) a few months back seemed to be that it wasn't, or that if it was it was extremely well made. Come to think of it, we focused on that one song, but though I only listened to it once, I seem to recall that the whole CD sounded very clean, so I'd be inclined to think they acquired proper masters for each song. I'd have to listen again (but I don't necessarily have the best ears to tell a thing like this, I'll admit). Just for clarification Indeed. I hope this Dolby Atmos thing is not going to be a standard for every future release. I need nice clean remastered stereo mixes, not Dolby Atmos. My stereo is not equipped for that and the mix sounds strange like this. For me the vinyl rip we have for decades still sounds better than the new Atmos remix. I'm missing sound effects listening to it on my normal basic stereo equipment.

I haven't checked this track out that fully, but these streaming sites that offer Atmos mixes also have the stereo mixes available that aren't just a 'fold down' of the Atmos mix. It should offer you both if your system is equipped to handle Atmos.
Maybe this track was an exception? But I would think the stereo mix available is a remaster of the original mix.
Certainly when they sell them that is the case. The Dolby Atmos BluRay of Purple Rain, for example, contains both the new Atmos mix and a high-resolution remaster of the original stereo mix.

I seriously cannot understand why some people want to crap on this release. We have literally NEVER had the 12" version of America from a remastered digital source, and so not only do we get a completely surprise release of the extended version (which sounds absolutely amazing, easily besting the nicest needledrops out there), we ALSO get an Atmos mix, which is a gift for those of us who can enjoy such a beast. However, what REALLY shows how whiny some people can be is how for some of those who haven't yet upgraded to play Atmos mixes actually complain that the Estate shouldn't bother with said mixes only because THEY aren't able to enjoy them. Screw anyone out there who might actually appreciate these revalatory mixes. That'd be like me saying I hate ATWIAD (I don't), so the Estate shouldn't release a SDE of it.
And as for the live video being "unreleased" as compared to the 12" version, it certainly was released on iTunes, where I bought an actual download of the official video.
BTW, if there IS an SDE of ATWIAD, I would hape that they include the entire 20-minute Nice concert where the America video was taken from. THe other songs have never leaked and it would be amazing to see America in the context of the full show.

I wish I had an informed answer for you - but I didn't listen with anything special - just apple earpods and also my laptop and it sounds so good.
Now, it could just be - that hearing different sounds in a song that I know like the back-of-my-hand is what makes it good ..... but that's fine by me at this point!
Hopefully someone else could give you more of an audiophile point of view.

I have a 7.1 receiver and speaker set-up. I play the Atmos mix on there (no headphones necessary) and it sounds incredible. Honestly, I don't think Atmos mixes could be experienced properly with headphones. You need the music coming at you from all sides to fully experience the power.

The thing with Atmos mixes is that it is only inserted as a new profit model to insert a way to get license fee payments from player/hardware and in future use (pay per listen) as tech progresses. There was a Dolby atmos story a while back about that they wanted to reinvent the way they got money out of the whole Dolby Atmos thing.

This is a great teaser. By using the holiday to drop something, to send a message to the fans that this is what you can expect from the upcoming “Around the World in a Day” release. Yes, it will include, at least, remastered 12” singles and b-sides, all in Atmos. I'm super excited!

Atmos mixes garner about as much interest from me as a colorized re-release of citizen kane might. Or witnessing someone vomiting in a parking lot...I see it's happening, and then the rest of my day proceeds as if it hadn't.

I'm happy for the new atmos mix and I love the 12" version! I love those jams where the groove just goes on and they get all the jam out, rehearsal wildness vibe! I think they should've stuck with the design for the French 7" , but what do I know https://www.discogs.com/r...on-America

Did the version of Dorothy Parker with horns ruined it for you? Not for me. It's an addition. "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts." (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)

I listen to Atmos on the 5.1 surround system I have in my living room for watching movies. It's not "Atmos" (which is several more speakers including some in the ceilings) but it still works quite well.
But most of these modern Atmos mixes are geared towards those with "spatial" earbuds. If you have an iPhone, get the latest AirPods that play Atmos and you should at least get the "spatial" effect they are intended to create.
IMO, not as good as large speakers spread around a room, but probably better than nothing.

Then you clearly know nothing about recording or mixing music. An Atmos mix from the original multi-track tapes is NOTHING like "a colorized re-release".
What they DO provide, for the hardcore fan, is the ability to hear the music in a more intimate fashion. Want to imagine what it was like being in studio when Prince was mixing the album? Or on stage with the band? Then a 5.1 or Atmos mix is the way to go.

Wrong. It's NOTHING like hearing When Doves Cry with the synth bass.
The Atmos mixes, generally speaking, add NOTHING that wasn't already there.
Do you think it becomes "ruined" to have heard a Prince song only on a mono speaker to later hear it in stereo?
Of course it doesn't.
But continue to speak ignorance about things you clearly know nothing about.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
the Atmos mix doesn't add anything. There are no horns that weren't on the original mix. It simply pulls the mix apart and spreads it across more speakers.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Could be. But that doesn't change the fact that hearing music in surround formats -- be it quad, 5.1 or Atmos -- is as much an improvement in most cases as was stereo vs. mono.
