World premiere PURPLE RAIN stage show, State Theatre’ Minneapolis - October 16-November 16, 2025

https://purplerainbroadway.com/

“The world premiere stage adaptation of PRINCE’S legendary film and album PURPLE RAIN™ comes to Hennepin Arts’ historic State Theatre October 16-November 16, 2025.

Based on the original screenplay by Albert Magnoli and William Blinn, this pre-Broadway debut is directed by Tony Award® nominee Lileana Blain-Cruz. It features a book by Tony Award winner and Pulitzer Prize finalist Branden Jacobs-Jenkins with music supervision, arrangements, and orchestrations by Tony Award winner Jason Michael Webb. Longtime Prince collaborators Bobby Z and Morris Hayes join the award-winning creative team as Prince Music Advisors.”

I commented on this in another topic but thought it deserved its own thread (or even a sticky).
There may or may not be something coming!

Can't wait until we finally get a new release next year and it's just the cast recording from this damn musical. Maybe we'll even get a box set with Dolby Atmos mixes if we're lucky! lol lol lol

A book?

Does it come with a book?

Never seen a musical.

Will never see one.

Don't like it. It's not music to me.

-

So, it comes with a published playwright ...

-

For those who are familiar with musicals, what y'all think this will be?

A good one?

I presume songs will be re-recorded, with other musicians, or do they use the orginal Prince instrumentals with new singers over it?

I might sound stupid, but I really have no idea about adaptations of something like the PR mvie and album...

-

And are they going to use music not from the PR era as well?

I find it interesting that Morris Hayes is highlighted as being on the creative team

Morris is very much of the 90s NPG era - Very different style

Having said that, for the record I have absolutely zero interest in this, other than the sad fallout for the fans, as this train crashes through the station and loses a tonne of money

For fuck's sake, it's a musical term. This was already discussed at length when this was originally announced a year ago. You can literally google "musical book" and get an answer.

For fucks sake, no I absolute can not.

I can't read, nor think, nor write, nor search, and I can't stand musicals.

I can only annoy (you). That's the only thing Im really good at, and ask more pointless stupid questions, waiting for your kind reply.

So. Musical book huh.

Look it up for me, will ya.

At last year's Celebration they had some of the cast, not sure if it's even the same people at this point. There was a female playing Jermome Benton. They did say there would be music from different Prince eras. The songs were played live with new singers. I don't plan on attending. lol

Probably not, but this show isn't for us. It's for the people who comment about how excited they are to buy Prince bedsheets on the official accounts lol

wave I'd go! It could be fun. At least, interesting to see what the theater creatives could come up with to make the story an interesting stage phenomenon. Serious investors have put their stake in it so I'm thinking the production will have something new to offer live audiences.

Note that at the future plans panel, they said that there was a first version that was more classical, and then the writers had come up with a more experimental version, and the estate had told them to not do that version.

.

Also note that this is supposed to premiere in four months, after being delayed half a year (!), and still there is very little info.

Some guy said the rewrite 'Woked it up' and had all those gender and rainbow nonsense being a big focus, the Estate seemingly shut that down post haste lol

You could have explained it in less time/words than this attention seeking rant. It's been 30 years. Time to grow up mate.

Incredibly gross comment.

OK, but it was still said and if that's the reason then so be it. Nothing groos about the comment in my opinion.
