Interview about the Purple Rain Atmos Mix

Paul Sinclair of Super Deluxe Edition has interviewed Chris James about his Purple Rain Atmos Mix. It's an interesting read that hints at some upcoming vault releases...

Working process very interesting with some quote which give hopes for the future ....at least !!!

SDE : What’s next for you, specifically, in terms of Atmos? Even if it’s not Prince, have you got other projects that you’re going to be working on soon?

Chris James

"Yes, there are vault-based Prince projects coming..."

If they finally put out some unreleased music but only in Dolby Atmos instead of its original stereo mix, I swear to god...

Whether your like the Atmos mixes or not, the interview was refreshingly good, with technical details and information about the whole process. Excellent.

I don't think if Vault releases finally get out .....these ones will be in atmos format only...Atmos will be an option like a bonus not the main format !!

That's what common sense would dictate, but this estate doesn't follow common sense.

P.S.
Chris said this about hearing the bass in "When Doves Cry"...:

I listened down maybe once or twice, but then I don’t want to get it in my head. A situation where you then hear it, even if it’s not there. But in that case, it was an Oberheim synth bass that was doing, like 16th notes, and it reminded me of Eurythmics which, ironically, was the hit at the beginning of that year, [Chris is likely referring to ‘Here Comes The Rain Again’] so that would make sense… why muted it.

More or less like in "I Would Die 4 U" then ?

Yeah, yeah, yeah...
The point is, there was no funk bass on "When Doves Cry" like many were thinking.
It's just a synth.
And just like Chris mentioned, he didn't want to really hear all the tracks in fear of never "un-hearing" it.
I agree 100%.

I'd still like to hear it. Even if I only listened twice like Chris did.

I understand his approach. His goal, whether we think he succeeded or not, was to create a mix that was close to the original stereo mix. In this regard, it makes sense to focus only on the tracks (from the multitrack) that were actually used for that original mix. Creating a new mix and trying to make it as similar as possible to an existing one must be incredibly difficult. Again: I'm not judging the result, just commenting on the process.

Now for us, listeners, I think we should be perfectly able to listen to different versions of a song and decide if we find them interesting or not, if we like them or not, etc.

The horns version of "The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker" hasn't ruined my experience of listening to the original version. So I'm curious to hear that "synth bass" version of "When Doves Cry". Am I going to be underwhelmed? Maybe. But it doesn't matter. I'm still curious.

Now you could say that hearing the non-fade-out version of "Crucial" on bootlegs has kind of ruined my experience of hearing the edited version on "Crystal Ball", but that's another question. lol

Well, he says they ran out of time.
But as he wasn’t involved in the deal he wouldn’t know if the mix was going to be delivered too late, or whether a deal couldn’t be reached in time.
Either way, the Estate fucked it.

Exactly. Jiust like the "sitar" version of Strange Relationship doesn't diminish our appreciation of the original release.

But I guess the bass version of When Doves Cry never leaked, at least to my knowledge. And the vast majority of leaks were by Prince himself back in the day. I expect he didn't think it worthy – it's such perfect production as-is. But as he didn't erase it from the multitrack, I'd still like to hear a mix, particularly if Prince completed one himself. But ultimately, it's probably bootleg quality music in most respects. Maybe someone at the @Estate could use that idea and sneak it out...

As well as the technical details and (possible) future vault releases being worked on, what struck me was how long Chris worked on this project: about 1/2 a year. No wonder things are taking along time to get out.
There may or may not be something coming!
