Prince & Chaka Khan

From an interview with Chaka Khan in today's Guardian (UK)

What was performing with Prince like? GeeSNZ64
It was like working with myself, more than anyone else I’ve worked with. Sia’s bringing up a close third, behind Prince and Miles Davis. Quincy Jones, too: he oozed inspiration and shared it. Prince just grabbed ideas out of the air and left you wondering: “Where did you get that?” He was a really deep and beautiful thinker. We worked on a lot of songs, and they’re all going to be on a CD I’m soon to release – there’s a lot of red tape that’s been in the way, but we’ve cleared it. It’s him and me and Larry Graham, together.

This release will go great with the reissue of Come 2 My House that was released in 2023!

You can still pick up a decent 2nd hand version of that Come 2 My House CD every now and then on eBay for reasonable price (£5-15). When that re-issue ever sees the light of day, it’ll probably cost more than that.

I take it you mean one was announced then, but nothing happened?
If so I guess that's what she meant with red tape and given the description (she and P and Larry) I'm actually pretty sure C2MH is the CD she's talking about (with maybe some bonus material).

In that case, there may have been some shit to negociate with the Estate.

Correct me if I'm wrong (I may be), but IIRC Prince said at the time that no contract was signed with Chaka and Larry (hard to believe, because then how would they even get paid, but who knows...). And, again, IIRC, he also said that Chaka and Larry owned their masters. Only the indicia clearly said (p) NPG records on both albums. Granted, TGE said (p) Warner Bros. and it turned out NPG owned it, but I assume WB owed it for a time then the rights were programmed to be reversed after X years. Was it the same with Come 2 My House and GCS 2000?

Remember: Mayte once said she'd discovered and was rather frustrated by the fact that Prince (NPG), not her, owned the masters' rights for her own album.

On the other hand, Tamar said she realized after P died that she owned Milk & Honey and what does the shelved record's indicia says? (p) SAJ Enterprises, Inc. (which, as it turns out, is a company owned by Tamar: https://unicourt.com/case...sup_ltst). So there, at least, proper legal arrangements had been made from the beginning.

So IDK, maybe it was nothing like that and Chaka just struggled to get the physical masters (the object itself) from the Estate, or to find a label or distributor or God knows what, but maybe she had to negociate with them about the fact that the record belonged to her, not them?

+ if there's any unreleased, bonus material composed by Prince that she wanted too include, she would also have to have obtained not only the tapes, but also the right of first release from the Estate.

Maybe she is tsalking abpout the reissue for Come 2 My House ?
I hope for a set of outtakes from those NPS/C2MH/GSC2000 sessions, they proabbly have enough material to compile a album or just dump all they have on so many discs they need and just relese them from all those albums.
Or maybe just do SDEs for each album

99% sure this is merely a reissue of Come 2 My House. She had announced that almost two years ago, the estate announced it a year and a half ago, and of course nothing came from it.

If there was no contract, i.e. limited or no paperwork, the estate would have to renegociate with everyone who worked on that: musicians, engineers, etc. Let's not forget that there are co-writers for a bunch of songs as well.

I doubt there were many outtakes, if there were any at all. Look at Welcome 2 America: a dozen songs, and not a 4CD box set of unreleased music from that era. Some talk about a couple of songs that got left off because the estate feels they belonged to other projects, but in the end there just was a regular album-sized release, not an SOTT-alike box set.

The Estate announced it??
Do you remember in which terms (like, 'we're involved' or 'we're glad to learn that Chaka...')?

If there's no contract for something, I'm pretty sure the estate claims ownership based on the fact that it was found in Paisley, otherwise all sorts of people would claim stuff. In other words: Chaka would have to prove ownership, not the other way around, and perhaps that was the red tape she was referring to. Renegotiations can only happen once ownership of the master is established.

Friends don't let friends clap on 1 and 3.

Prince posted something public regarding this back in the day that Chaka and Larry owned the albums. I don't know how much that would count as proof

Oh, it seems it means nothing. For TGE it says WB, so it seems the LOC lists the original (p), not any updated status.

Having assembled the exhaustive Diamonds And Pearls boxset, will Prince's estate celebrate next year's 40th anniversary of Purple Rain? The album was expanded in 2015, but hasn't had the full deluxe treatment.

.

"Of course," agrees Charles F Spicer Jr. "We'd be remiss if we didn't do something around Purple Rain next year, for both the film and the album. It's the work that elevated Prince to greatness, so we won't leave 2024 without doing justice to Purple Rain. That's a signature project."

.

Spicer is also determined that Prince's later albums will start to see similar deluxe treatment, explaining: "There's most certainly going to be super deluxe sets of Prince's later music. He was always creating, and there's so much music that we've got a lot of happy work on our hands to figure out how to release it all."

.

For the first time, some of the other artists who released albums on Prince's Paisley Park label will also see their albums reissued, some of which have been long out of print, such as Jill Jones.

.

Spicer reveals: "There's a great possibility that music will get released. There's so much to plan, and we need fans' patience to help make it happen. But this is the 25th anniversary of Chaka Khan's album which she made with Prince, Come 2 My House. That's being re-released this year, for example."

Chaka Khan : Sunshine Of My Life (Prince involvement?)

Unless I'm mistaken, I haven't found any information addressing the subject I'm about to, neither on Prince.org nor from your friends at Schkopi.com nor elsewhere, so if I missed this, sorry !

I have just discovered a bootleg of Chaka Khan Sunshine Of My Life, a song which according to some should have been part of the album Dare You To Love Me, a project album produced between 1993 and 1995 (the same period as Me'Shell N. and Prince collaborated, isn't it ?), album never published but canceled by Warner for any reasons.
The Chaka Khan's version of the song Pain should have appeared on it, song which ended up on the soundtrack of the Living Single series eventually, this should have been Chaka Khan's 10th solo album and is pretty good as you can judge for yourself, Me'Shell Ndegeocello collaborates on several times.

A little something leads me to think that Pain was not the only Prince production destined to end up in Chaka Khan's hands, because regarding Sunshine Of My Life, it seems quite obvious to me that Prince is involved, at least if I judge by his voice which punctuates the chorus.

Another bootleg that you can easily listen to via YouTube (by searching for Dare you To Love Me) such as Trust seems a tad quite Princely to me as well, although we don't hear his sweet voice there, on the other hand this one was supposedly not intended for the album.

To a slightly lesser extent, the songs Here I am & Power make me wonder too ...

So I summarize:

Sunshine Of My Life ( https://www.youtube.com/w...KjnlhWymTg )
Trust ( https://www.youtube.com/w...Kk0aNdXQB8 )
Here I am ( https://www.youtube.com/w...p;index=11)
Power ( https://www.youtube.com/w...p;index=17 )

What do u think ?
Please don't hesitate to enlighten me and share with me your wise impressions 🙏

The tone of your post suggests anyone disagreeing with you will be made fun of, and that you won't change your mind no matter what people say, so I don't know if I should bother replying, but here we go anyway....

.

I don't hear Prince in any of those songs. This voice clearly doesn't sound anything like him to me. Neither do any of the arrangements, sounds or melodies in any of those songs.

.

Does it prove he wasn't involved in? No. Has Prince occasionally contributed things to songs that don't sound much, or at all "like him"? Yes. Has there been cases when some voice or instrument really sounded like Prince (as in, much more than in those songs), yet it was just someone imitating his style? Yes. What we "hear" (or believe we hear) isn't reliable information either way.

.

But given how often people assumed Prince was invoved in something when he wasn't, from Natural Selection to Teena Marie to Martika's A Magical Place to those Kim Basinger unreleased sessions and countless other similar occurences, I don't put much faith in such statements unless they're backed by research or someone involved confirming them, and even less if I don't "hear" anything that sounds obvious to me.

.

Either way, the red tape Chaka has to deal with regarding (re)releasing the Dare You To Love Me sessions (including Pain) is with WB, not the Estate, so I don't suppose anything from those sessions will be released in connexion to a Come 2 My House reissue if C2MH is, indeed, the project she's talking about. Sadly, I don't see Dare You To Love Me coming out anytime soon sad

Thanks for taking the time to reply DATABANK. Don't you think some people don't need more than their ears and intuition, while others don’t ? Some people need a consensus to form an opinion, some don't. To me, the tracks mentioned sound so Prince-like that it’s ridiculous. Hearing Prince singing in the back is enough for me. I admit I had doubts too back in the day when Natural Selections was out, I was 17. I have no doubts now regarding those songs with Chaka Khan.
I admit too I get slightly circumspect hearing people saying it definitely doesn't sound like him at all when all I can hear is him.
Maybe if people were less categorical in how they express their disagreement, it would make their interlocutor less inclined to mock them ?

No need to argue, time as it always does, will tell.

Indeed, there's little point in arguing over feelings, when what we need is fact. Whether Prince was involved or not, we'll most likely get to know someday. I checked ASCAP and the LoC, but sadly, none of those songs seem to have been copyrighted (at least not listing Khan as the interpreter). Actually IDK if David Gamson is approachable on social media, but if he is, one good way to get to the bottom of this would be to ask him. All I can say is that Prince, at any given time in his career, used a certain set of very distinct sound effects on any instrument he used. They're usually a good clue when it comes to his involvement and I cannot hear any of those on those tracks. But like I said, there have been occasional exceptions where he used sounds that were remarkably generic, so this is no evidence per se. Regarding the vocals, I'll admit the chorus could lead to doubt (though the more I listen to them trying to hear Prince, the more I hear him, when I didn't at all at first, and this isn't a good sign — see my explainations about biases below), but there's something off, particularly the short part at 1:40, that seems to reveal a different kind of voice than Prince's hiding behind the impersonation. But again, given the poor sound quality of the file, it's hard to be 100% positive.

.

Now, to discuss the method itself, and to reply to your questions:

.

Don't you think some people don't need more than their ears and intuition, while others don’t ?

Not really, no. Professional musicians and sound engineers maybe, I tend to trust them much more when it comes to those things, because they have trained ears (= an expertise). Anyone else: no. Research in psychology and cognitive science has shown over and over that we shouldn't trust our senses nor our intuitions, yet we insist in doing so. This brings me back to posters recently claiming here they'll always be able to identify an AI made Prince songs because of their "feelings", when language AI just passed the Turing test... As Etienne Klein says: "We refuse to believe what we know".

.

Some people need a consensus to form an opinion, some don't.

This may be reasonable when it comes to matters of a moral/ethical nature, where science and facts can only tell us what is, but cannot tell us what should be — though one better have thought the matter thoroughly before forming an idiosyncratic opinion.

When it comes to factual matters, forming an opinion without a consensus (let alone any evidence) is the most foolish approach one can have. And by consensus, one shouldn't mean "general consensus", because this also is a sloppery slope, but "experts consensus". Of course, when it comes to whether Prince is behind/on a song or not, there are no experts proper if not the most hardcore fans and/or, even better, professional musicans/engineers that are also hardcore fans. If there was a consensus among either one or the other of those categories, I would be way more inclined to believe my assessement is wrong (because, indeed, maybe it is).

.

To me, the tracks mentioned sound so Prince-like that it’s ridiculous. Hearing Prince singing in the back is enough for me.

Respectfully, they probably don't and you probably don't, but if I may, I suspect you want to. Like, a lot. And if so, this will lead to a lot of cognitive biases that will make you hear what you want to hear no matter what. Which is also something that makes me suspicious: most people in this community, myself included, also want to hear Prince on those songs, because we do want to discover and hear any new track involving Prince (and the more, the better). Yet, despite our wish to hear Prince, many of us do not. This is not a good sign for your hypothesis.

.

Yet again, none of this tells us anything about whether Prince is there or not. If evidence comes to our attention that supports your hypothesis, I will be the first to tell you "good job, mate!" and to rejoice (and so, contrarily to what your original post implies, will probably the others, since they, too, also want more Prince material). But your method and the certainty you derive from it are questionable. And it's OK: my methods to reach conclusions have been questionable at times in the past, too, and probably still are on occasion. I'm just trying to be a little disciplined when it comes to those things.

.

One wouldn't believe one could end-up discussing epistemology because of a few Chaka Khan songs, yet there we are lol

Interesting. On 1st listen........I dont hear a single thing related 2 Prince.

My tuppence worth, is that having listened to Prince - and all of the related artists - for the last 40 years, these tracks could almost certainly have had Prince's involvement in them.

The fact that Chaka's version of Pain is in this mix of tracks, suggests a strong connection straight away anyway, and the links shared above, at least 2 of those (to me) sound very Prince-like.

Or at the very least, things he could have contributed to or enjoyed playing on.

Either way I'd love to have a re-issued Come 2 My House on vinyl, plus some more of this material (including Chaka's version of Pain) alongside it.

It's been very quiet (following the big Estate announcement of the Vault being 'freed'). Would love to see some evidence of that soon.

None of us are getting any younger! Peace.

FJODOR

she said that these songs that are coming out soon are her, prince and larry g.

larry was not in prince's sphere yet, in 1995, was he?

besides, I'm one of the people who don't hear prince in these songs. the voice,
the accent, it's just not him -to me. but i've only been obsessed with prince for
about 35 years, so hey.

of course prince worked with and for her prior to the Come 2 My House album,
but I don't think these songs belong on that list.

Just to remind, my post from October 2023. I'm looking forward to hear what people as ...

kindofblue (Sorry to say, but this doesn't sound like Prince 2 me.)

kitbradley (Doesn't sound like Prince involvement to me.)
Vannormal (Sounds like Prince, but is definatly not him. Prince would put a lot more of himself in only that.)

billymeade (That isn't Prince, it's not even close.)

... will have to say when we know for sure Prince was definitely involved in this project 😅

I don't think Prince has anything to do with these tracks, but I really hope that Chaka finally releases the Dare You To Love Me album someday soon. It's a strong collection of songs and shame on Warners for rejecting this project back in 1995! mad These are truly some of her best songs.

It's a funny, and not coincidental thing that prince, Chaka Khan and Larry Graham were all at odds with WB when they decided to release their trio of albums. Larry, too, had an album rejected and shelved by WB before being dumped by them (Chillin', presumably from 1989, finally released in 2020).

Back in the early 2000s a wellknown former orger said Sunshine Of My Life was a track he worked on in the 90s for Chaka Khan and Prince. of course nobody believed him until we heard the track finally
