My understanding is that the Estate and Netflix have come to an agreement not to release the doc - and so the Estate is free to release what it likes. Exciting times (although I would have loved to see the doc). | |

I'm assuming they mean everything salvageable has been remastered and a release strategy has been plotted.
If there's no unique marketing strategy, then none of that will matter to Gen Z and casuals. | |

How much do y'all wanna bet they'll throw us one or two singles at most and then fuck off to "produce" this new documentary for the rest of the year? They're gonna say they're shifting all focus to the new doc and use that as the latest excuse for a lack of worthwhile vault releases. |

Well, Netflix paid them for a documentary. I'd guess the estate are going to have to pay for a new one. So I'd assume they're doing it in-house and giving it to Netflix. Low budget puff piece incoming. Probably going to be several album releases in fairly quick succession in order to finance it. It'll be savaged by critics because it's not the documentary people want to see. The journalists who previewed the original will talk about how it glosses over pivotal moments in his life, and generally tries to cover up the negatives from the original. It'll be widely ignored by the public. I'd be surprised if Netflix were open to a 1 to 1 swap though. So I'd also guess they're getting, Purple Rain, Cherry Moon, GB and probably a couple of concert films too... Exclusive rights/First refusal on future releases for the next x number of years? All speculation obviously. There was actual buzz and excitement for the documentary and the estate torpedoed it because Spicer and Llondel fancied playing at being filmmakers. What a fucking shambles. |
