I Wish U Heaven Part 1-2-3

Recently found this sexy jewel at a Salvation Army in a water damaged sleeve for $1.99. Luckily the vinyl played perfectly.

I had never heard this version before. Talk about a gift from the grave. Wow. Incredible mix. I had chills as soon as the needle dropped.

I got it back in the day as a mini-CD. In order to play it in your CD player, you had to put it into an auxilirary holder...I think this was included and called a 5" adaptor...

But what a great extended version that was - and it includes one of my all-time favourite b-sides biggrin

I also got a mini CD of Sheena Eastons 101 just a little later - and used the adaptor from the I Wish U Heaven mini disc wink

I do love and miss a good Prince 12”. Thinking about it there’s only around 10 or so ones that fit into my idea of a classic Prince 12 inch though.

First 12” was Just As Long As We’re Together (Disco Mix) 6:29 / Soft And Wet (Disco Mix) 3:02 mixes by Jim Burgess. But for me, a classic Prince 12 inch consists of an A-side with an extended version or remix (album version or just edited version doesn’t count) with a B-side of an unheard new song.

Therefore, a lot of the early 12” vinyls, such as Sexy Dancer (Long Version) 8:50 / Bambi 4:22, and even Let’s Work (Dance Mix) 8:02 / Gotta Stop (Messin’ About) 2:55, don’t quite make my list of classic 12 inches. 1999 only had the album version on it, despite having How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore, e.g. on the Uk 12”. Horny Toad was on one edition of a Little Red Corvette 12” but it was album version of LRC - the LRC (Dance Remix) 8:22 was on German and Belgian (I think) 12” but backed by album versions of Lady Cab Driver and International Lover respectively.

Then came Purple Rain but even then, the When Doves Cry 12” had the album version, as did the Purple Rain 12 (well a slightly shortened version), so for me again not quite classic 12” Prince vinyls, which is a shame because both are backed by great b-sides: 17 Days and God respectively.

However, around this time the great 12 inches begin with

Let’s Go Crazy (Special Dance Mix) 7:35 / Erotic City (Make Love Not War Erotic City Come Alive) 7:24.

and also,

I Would Die 4 U (Extended Version) 10:15 / Another Lonely Christmas (Extended Version) 6:47

The ‘Around The World In A Day’ era also produced some fantastic 12 inches, although slightly confused as releases/b-sides were different in separate territories, e.g.

Raspberry Beret (New Mix) 6:34 /
She’s Always In My Hair* (New Mix) 6:31
(*In the UK SAIMH was the b-side to Paisley Park, the first single/12” from Around The World In A Day, but it was the shorter version of 3:27 - there was Paisley Park (Remix) 6:53 on the UK version)

Raspberry Beret (New Mix) 6:34
Hello (Extended Version) 6:23
(This was the UK 12” that came out which I got at the time. In the USA, two Pop Life 12 inches came out with two different versions of Pop Life: Sheila E’s ‘Fresh Dance Mix’ 6:16 and Prince’s original ‘Extended Version’ 9:07 - Hello (Fresh Dance Mix) 6:38 was on the b-side of both - was this version of Hello really 15 seconds longer than the UK release?)

America 21:46 /
Girl (Extended Version) 7:35

Then a couple of decent ‘tie-ins’ with the Parade album:

Kiss (Extended Version) 7:16 /
❤️ or $ (Extended Version) 6:49

Mountains (Extended Version) 9:56 /
Alexa de Paris (Extended Version) 4:54)

For the Sign O’ The Times album, none of the 12” had the classic remix as A-side / new song as b-side, e.g. SOTT and If I Was Your Girlfriend were album versions, even though they both had amazing b-sides in ‘La, la, La, he, he, her’ and ‘ Shockadelica’ respectively. U Got The Look had a remix of it plus Moquake; I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man (album version) had Hot Thing mixes.

For the Lovesexy album, Alphabet St Don’t have a new song as b-side, just a remix. However next single with a 12” was Glam Slam:

Glam Slam (Extended Version) 8:52 /
Escape (Free Yo Mind From This Rat Race) 6:26
This is borderline for me for a classic 12” as Escape samples Glam Slam, so could be considered a remix. However, the I Wish U Heaven 12” definitely makes the grade:

I Wish U Heaven (Parts 1, 2 & 3) 10:12 /
Scarlet Pussy 6:09

As does Partyman and Scandalous from Batman. I nearly discounted Batdance too because it contains 2 mixes and a new b-side song:

Batdance (The Batmix) 7:15 /
Batdance (Vicky Vale Mix) 5:55
200 Balloons 5:05

Partyman (Video Mix) 6:20 /
Feel U Up (Long Stroke) 6:28

Scandalous (The Crime 6:24, The Passion 6:17, The Rapture 6:39)
Sex 7:02
When 2 R In Love 4:02
(Since When 2 R In Love was already released on Lovesexy, for me, this detracts slightly from fitting into being a classic 12”)

After that, releases were full of remixes mainly, so were more like EPs rather than 12”, e.g. New Power Generation, Gett Off, Cream, etc.
There may or may not be something coming!

What a coincidence.

Yesterday, was a once-in-a-long-time day full of golden Prince finds.

I strolled around in some second hand book shops here in Brussels, and there was a corner with only a few crates of vinyls, tucked away underneath the table.

I started digging when my eye grabbed a glimpse of 'Hot Thing'.

Boy whas I lucky!

I found seven 45 rpm's in mint, and nearly mint condition (all nicely packed in a transparant sleeves):

I wish U Heaven / The Future / Nasty Girl / When Doves Cry (purple vinyl!) / I Could Never Take The Place... / Hot Thing, and, For Love.

Plus a few 33 rpm's in nearly mint and good condition : Sheila E's The Glamorous Life EP / Paisley Park / (Chaka's) I Feel For You / ATWIAD (LP).

... and all these for € 70,00! He asked 100, but I negotiated. Sleeve's were not damaged, or written on, nothing missing. Here in Europe people sometimes wrote their name on it, or a message for someone else. I am super pleased!!! Although I have all of 'm already. biggrin

I still keep on buying them when I find them, and, I listen to them again!

I left one maxi single (Glam Slam) because the sleeve sticker looked all wet and drenched, and the plastic all rippled, and I regret it now.

Maybe I go back. wink

The Extended Versions were always the go to versions smile - perhaps more so with regards to the B-sides.

and 100% agreed that 'a classic Prince 12 inch consists of an A-side with an extended version or remix (album version or just edited version doesn’t count) with a B-side of an unheard new song. '

Potentially could count Madhouse’s 6:
6 (End Of The World Mix) 6:20 / Six (Edit) 3:37 / Six and 1/2 2:36 - released Jan 1987

However, probably first true associate artist 12” with extended version / unheard B-side, I think was Jill Jones in spring 1987:
Mia Bocca (Extended Version) 6:04 / Mia Bocca (Dub Version) 5:48 / 77 Bleeker St. (Extended Version) 4:34

Details from a trawl of Prince Vault (and for previous post). 12 inches for The Time’s first 3 albums didn’t have any extended versions; they had a couple of B-sides in Grace and Tricky. Vanity 6 and Apollonia 6 had some extended versions but no new songs as B-sides. Sheila E also had some extended versions and some new songs as B-sides but they weren’t by Prince, so discounted.

Thanks for spotting that, and bringing it to my attention - I’d not heard that before. it’s a remix of the longer released live version by the looks of Prince Vault ( https://princevault.com/i...:_The_Bird ).

The Bird (Remix) 6:25 / My Drawers (edit) 3:42

The remix still doesn’t make it a ‘classic’ 12” for me, as the b-side is just an edit of the album track.

Edit: Discogs link for The Bird 12” ( https://www.discogs.com/r...UyMDA1OQ== )

RODSERLING

I have part 1-2-3 on the vinyl single reissue.
I never understood why like 20 years ago, WB didn't released a comprehensive 4 cd set with all the 12', remixes and b-sides on a comprehensive collection.
Ultimate was a strange concept.
