I love that, too, but I'd consider it a live performance, not a video.

There was a video for Fury that tried to recreate the SNL performance, but it just wasn't the same.

"Kiss" indeed is great and fun. Never gets tired.

Add for me,

"Girls & Boys"

and for sure also

"Mountains" (for nostalgic reasons)/

"Raspberry Beret" (iconic)

"Automatic" (sexy as hell)

Plus :

"Sign O The Times" (great word/light effect, still!)

and,

"When 2 r In Love" with the all black screen & only subtitles.

Shame it never got much attention, pure art to me, daring and very UN-Prince as a choice. But it fitted the idea of the black album so well. only it should've been another song of that album.

Prince videos from the 80's were pretty mid (I'm speaking from a millenial perspective). I wish u heaven or Alphabet st haven't aged well at all.

From 89 and beyond things improved drastically.

I like Batdance, Cream , Diamonds and Pearls, Te Amo corazon, Musicology.

It's like the exact same video over and over until Purple Rain era.

Then it's like cornball graphics or bad miming. Wendy wildly strumming a non-existent acoustic guitar throughout the verses of "Kiss".

The two best videos of the 80s were "When 2 R in Love" and "Scandalous". They should all be like either, just Prince staring you down 1 man 1 mic or a black screen with lyrical text.

That's true, but it was true of many music videos in the '70s and early '80s. Most bands simply mimed a peformance on a stage. It was lack of imagination. Eventually people realized you could do so much more with music videos.

IIRC, Prince said once that he didn't like making video's.

(Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do remember him stating that.)

For sure he was more of a performer, rather than a videoclip maker.

The 1999 video's all are great. He's performing... simple.-

I need to add another one I like;

"Paisley Park."

Very unPrincy as well. And indeed it also looks very dated, but nice for it's psychedelic approach, and the kids singing...

Until Michael Jackson showed everybody how it's done.

Actually, i find most of the "Alphabet St." video meh.
Though I like the idea with letters and numbers.
But his dancing is somehow underwhelming.

I don't think it was so much a lack of imagination as the videos were simple tools designed to sell the band to perspective labels, concert promoters, etc.
