The symbol album was Prince being inspired by a new band who could play..a cohesive unit. I was a whore back then

I saw that album as Prince's attempt to keep elements of hardcore to his pop.

Hardcore musicianship...not rap or much like that. Back to badass bass, keys, songwriting etc. Back to the hardcore "organic" sound.

Oh yes, the production values on this album are hot. The NPG sound better on this album than any of the others, in my opinion.

Jestyr, any thoughts on this one?

I'm intrigued by your characterization of the record as 'militant'. Can you expand on this?

I just believe Prince wanted to please everyone on that project. He wanted to write a rock operatic ode to introduce Mayte, follow up the commercial success of Diamonds and Pearls with a harder, more 'street' style record AND sell a 10 million dollar CD to earn his advance from Warner Bros. I think the effort it took to do all that at once muddled the whole thing and the last minute second guessing (adding Eye Wanna Melt With U and cutting the segues) made it incomprehensible.

Not my favorite record as you can probably tell but I have gained an appreciation for it over the years.

Militant in that on this record it feels like he wanted to be everything to everyone, and nothing was going to stop him. The greatest thing about this album is that he perfectly translated his live sound in the recording studio, and without compromising authenticity.

if i could go back in time and see some act I and act II shows, i would die a happy man.

The prince album was a "barbarella la la la" trip.

Some say his colorful showmanship on stage was at its finest & most energetic then. Gold was ok but I felt it was a step down from the Act I and II fun.

I think we'd ALL be setting our time machines to an earlier date...

Tennesse: "Chumley, Lets go see Mr. Whoopie and the way back machine.."

I am a whore wave, because I LOVE love the Symbol album! It is everything that a Prince fan could ask for: ballads, quirkiness, rap, bohemian, and pure funkiness overall.

This is serious mind control...U WILL
SAY U R A WHORE IF U LIKE SYMBOL ALBUM...

Unprecedented...

The start of a new creative burst ('92-'96).

Imagine how great D & P would've been
with Horny Pony & Call The Law instead of
Jughead And Cream?

Imagine how great Gold would've been
with Rippgoddazippa & Days of Wild
instead of We March & MBGITW?
