I am a sucker for So Far, So Pleased. A perfect pop/rock song. I give the era a B. A lot of unrealized potential. It should have been what Musicology was. Clive Owen Davis and prince didn't play well.

Strange But True.

.

At first, I thought it was OK.

.

Then one day, about a year after the album's release, it hit me hard. I became fascinated by its lyrics and atmosphere.

.

Then in 2004, those lyrics literally became the narrative of a breakup I went through, so I loved the song even more.

.

Okay, let me say this quick, before I start to cry
You're the only one that I gave it to, the one I fantasized for
And time away from you has taught me
What I should have known
That this hole I'm trying to fill with another, yeah, it's grown
And I got your package
But when I tried to write back I bailed
See, trying to express the future, sometimes language fails
And over this time I've learned
My life force is increased by knowing you
Every door that closes, another one opens
Strange but true
Strange but true
No regrets because I forget the unfamiliar faces
Those petty lies and alibis, just gold diggers chasing
Dreams of sovereignty, they tried to come between you and me
A curse therein set forces a chain of events
That only freed me when I remembered
Where I was and who I am
The only Prince that will ever rule this holy land
All understand and all stand under this affirmation now
By the power invested in me by God
All negativity bows
Strange but true, let's see what you can do
You may have lost me, but I found myself
The ones who love me without condition, this is my wealth
And with these words I will win
Repeat them over and over again
All understand and all stand under this affirmation now
By the power invested in me by God
All negativity bows
All negativity bows
All negativity bows
Strange but true, let's see what you can do
Strange but true, let's see what you can do
All negativity bows
Strange but true (true, true)
All negativity bows
All negativity bows
(All negativity bows)
Strange but true
Strange but true
Strange but true

This could have been such a hit with a good music video!! Story goes it was supposed to be a single, but No Doubts's label prevented it out of fear it would compete with Return Of Saturn's singles rolleyes

.

And a few months later, The Corrs did have a hit ripping it off with Breathless rolleyes

So Far, So Pleased is my favorite track on Rave and it's a shame it wasn't the lead single. I think it's a pretty good album.

Unlike a lot of commentary on this project that I've seen around here, I thought the album worked really well! "So Far, So Pleased" is my fave. Cool to sing along, I love the sentiment, and enjoy the guitar work here.

FJODOR

I dusted this one off, about a week ago and listened to it a few times over a couple of days.

What struck me most is that I noticed how bitter and cynical a lot of it sounds, knowing the
things we know now.

Like the 'break up' songs abou/for Mayte, and The Sun The Moon And Stars 'having' to be
on it because Mani lived in Montreal etc.

Although there are a handful of songs on it that I think are absolutely great, I think this is
now one of my least favorite albums, in hindsight.

Mostly because some of the songs seem so duplicitous, manipulative and gaslighting.

The Jason Nevins mix had a great "summer club hit" potential. Could have done wonders if promoted properly, kind of how the DJ Boris remix of Moloko's Bring It Back saved their second album (not to mention their career) at the last minute.

That got a lot of radio play here and agree, they could've made it a big hit with a push.

"So Far, So Pleased" and "The Sun, Moon and Stars" are my favs. It's a solid record.

It's actually the record's 25th anniversary, which to me is more significant than when the fans whine the Estate didn't celebrate random x number anniversary of x album just because x album sold better.

"guh guh the Estate missed the 17th and 1/2 anniversary of '3121', WHO'S RUNNING THINGS THERE?"

If we all treated each Prince album as equally important/viable we wouldn't be in this world where the Estate tries every day to refashion, repurpose and retread 'Purple Rain' over and over and over and over and over and Hey "Purple Rain" just hit 22 million streams, 14 times platinummmm 'Purple Rain' 'Purple Rain' 'Purple Rain' "hmmm, next SDE? Well, there's probably no demand because it's not 'Purple Rain' but maybe if we combine all remaining 35 albums into one single SDE and fit two albums per disc there could be a limited pressing for the hardcore fams"

Surprisingly good bunch of songs, but just doesn’t feel like a consistent album.
And that shiny blue bodysuit didn’t help! biggrin
Baby Knows and Pretty Man stand out to me.
Rave is great too, but feels so out of place with the other songs.

There was a misprint of the album where the silent segue lasts eight seconds instead of 4. If you like it so much, you may want to put your hands on this "extended" version lol

Not a big fan of this era. I was so pumped waiting for it and SOOOO disappointed when i first heard it. But like all Prince albums time has been kind, and I've warmed to it. This song here helped.

Wait, is it true that Sam Jennings said that he and Mani had to convince Prince to put The Greatest Romance on the album? If that's the case, then they're primarily responsible for this being a financial failure.

The Adam & Eve remix could've gone on there, because the last couple minutes are perfection, but the "base" song is just SO corny, and schmaltzy, and to this day the lyrics are either incomprehensible or unbelievably cruel (it seems in retrospect that he's saying that his love affair with Mayte was just bullshit to sell records?) - absolutely zero casual fans responded to this song. All my friends clowned on me endlessly, as I had been convinced that this album was gonna kick ass.

It killed the whole project immediately, no to mention that the video came out months later (videos were absolutely crucial at the time), and then it was just a boring, color by numbers video.

The bizarre choice of the album cover and that hideous outfit and hairstyle certainly didn't help things.

Imagine the first single being Strange but True, or Beautiful Strange (had it been on there), or So Far So Pleased or literally almost any other song except Hot Wit U (another really embarrassing song at the time- now it's like ok fine, I can fuck with it but wouldn't play it where anyone else could hear).
No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

Sex is not love. Love is not sex. Putting words in other people's mouths will only get you elected.

The best song on Rave is actually " Everyday is a winding road".
In my first listenings to the album ( that I love), that was for me the obvious hit. Then I read the booklet and didcovered it was only a cover !
When your best song is a cover ( such as Emancipation and Lotus Flower by the way, each time I was cheated until I read the lyrics), no Wonder why your project is an artistic and commercial flop, and you can hardly search for a good lead single.
