In his defense he did try to shelve that release Black Album style but Daily Mirror refused.
He was successful in ensuring it didn't get released globally anyway. Shame. I liked the album. Some superb tracks on there. In fact it probably seemed weaker than it was because it was free.

Very doubtful.
I'm not sure about that bolded part... Todd rundgren also gave access to his work via PatroNet in 1998. I don't know if he preceded Prince. Either way, they were both forward thinkers in that regard.

I did, too. Shame that we were supposed to get this album after that without truncated songs that would be sold in stores, but we didn't. It's also a shame that here old fans come to complain about the fucked up handling of Prince's estate instead of celebrating his great music. Long live the boot legs! Glad I bought a bunch from Europe on CD while you still could and the dripping downloads that used to show up once in a while. You want to celebrate Prince? Listen to your downloads or boots! Prince was notorious for trying to get reactions out of people. I think there is a very good chance he was here and posted often, simply for this own amusement. "You always get the dream that you deserve, from what you value the most" -Prince 2013

Did we ever get to the bottom of whether Prince was 'TheNewWatcher' and 'TheNewWatcher2'? .

This is the account I exchanged quite a few OrgNotes with and for a little while I did think so. I wouldn't say, with hindsight, that any of the answers he gave me proved that he was Prince, I was always trying to word my questions in an open way to see if he would give me anything at all, but I was always a little disappointed with the cryptic responses. I remember trying to tease information about when he was next visiting the UK for a tour etc (this was probably around 2002-4 I think, I would imagine first messages were before the UK ONA tour) but you could argue the responses were vague enough to cover either possibility, yes or no
When TheNewWatcher first appeared there were definitely a couple of things that I felt only Prince or someone at Paisley Park would have been able to do, I seem to recall his avatar was initally the NPG Music Club logo and typeface for 2002-3 which hadn't launched at that point, or was it a Xenophobia logo and typeface before that had been downloadable as an album or before the Celebration theme was announced? I asked where he got that from he said " a friend" , he showed great interest in the launch of itunes on a thread, and then the NPGMC music store also appeared very soon after, so we were all putting 1+1+1 together to =3 plus didn't he seem to know about the Musicology song contest entrants with those sample snippets? and I think the Musicology era photo of him and Manuella in the car with the CD case appeared on his avatar before being made public (I can't 100% say that was the case of course).
Who knows?

You can't say that was definitely Prince--you don't know that. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Actually, in this topic, Prince was rumoured to be DWZ. After such mockery towards Thé New Watcher 2, DWZ erased all of his posts, leaving only that enigmatic message : eye will c u on the other side That is so fucking cool.

I'm pretty sure Prince was The New Watcher. At the same time the account appeared, he began messaging people individually as well as revealing details that were (at the time) not public. [Edited 10/18/24 19:15pm] .

Wow, I'm amazed.
This is the first time I've read about TheNewWatcher 1&2. Either he's the best Prince impersonator ever (at least in writing) and all I can say is: respect! Or it really was Prince. I'm leaning towards the latter. And IF it really was Prince, this thread here is unbeatably funny: "Get ready 2 Love me again." https://prince.org/msg/7/...sg_7426264 [Edited 10/19/24 1:21am] NPG Radio:

I recall around the Hit N Run tour in 2000-2001 there was some posts by BlackEyedPeas giving info on Geneva and the tour. A lot of people thought it was P or someone from the crew
